Thanks to everyone involved in putting on a really enjoyable event. First Beacon ride in a long time for me, and the longest in a while too. Out of the headwind it almost felt like spring! Excellent work Phil and everyone.

Hello Si,
It looks like you can read the old issues here: https://issuu.com/boneshakermag Also, although the magazine is defunct it looks like their web shop is still online and you can buy downloads of the magazine https://boneshakermag.bigcartel.com/

Thanks for a most enjoyable B run, brisk pace down got us there in time for breakfast, despite the flats, slightly more sedate on the ride home which suited me fine. The sun even came out!

Thanks for stepping in and leading an exceedingly pleasant B ride Si. Quote of the day: "It really feels like Spring" - about half an hour before we found ourselves huddling like penguins against the hail.

Re: Schwalbe marathon Winter tyres
I've got an old mountain bike which I use for work when it's icy, it has the equivalent mtb studded tyres and they're brilliant. A friend has the marathons and reports the same, even when cornering. As Steve says, you still have to go easy on the brakes, but I've never come off on ice or snow since ...

Actually set out to join the C run on Sunday - first club run for what seems like years - flatted less than two miles from home, fixed that then realised I'd forgotten my drink bottle. I slunk home again cursing.

Re: How do you find the time?!?
:D Indeed Alan. Tim - thanks for your comments - my riding has always been mostly recreational and based on longer more leisurely rides, I suppose I need to think more about squeezing in short sharp rides instead. My kids are a couple of years older than yours, they do ride bikes for transport but n...

Re: How do you find the time?!?
Thanks for the replies - early mornings may be the way to go, although Stuart, you're right - the other part of this is motivation when you are already busy.
Alan - impeccable logic. "I need to work out how to fit cycling into my busy schedule - just going to ponder that for 50 miles or so..."

How do you find the time?!?
Hello Beaconites, I returned to full-time work in Summer and since May I haven’t been on a proper bike ride – I just can’t seem to find the time. The week is taken up with work, several evenings ferrying kids to various activities, and weekends wanting to spend time with my wife and family, help wit...

I've been commuting for years with one of these: https://www.topeak.com/global/en/products/Bags/858-MTXTrunkBagEXP You have to have a Topeak rack though, and it might not be big enough for your laptop (mine is small so it works fine). You can get quick-release seatpost racks for these bags if you ne...

Bishop's Castle
Dear Beaconites, Does anyone have a route from Brum to Bishop's Castle? We're going camping there next week and I am toying with the idea of riding over there. Don't mind if it's hilly - I won't be carrying anything, my wife would be driving over. So before I spend ages re-inventing the wheel, has a...

Nasty fall
Was looking forward to my first club run of 2017 tomorrow but took a tumble on the way home from work last night. Handlebar clipped a bollard and I hit the ground hard. Couple of hours in A+E, cracked ribs, bruised hip, and new helmet and jacket required. Feeling a bit sorry for myself but I guess i...

Neil, I spoke to an engineering lecturer at work about this, he reckoned it would depend on where the dent is, but a small dent shouldn't be a problem unless and until a crack starts to form. The advice was to keep an eye on it. Aluminium is less elastic than steel so less able to tolerate bending, ...
Turbos
If anyone's looking for a basic turbo trainer, International Stock in Kings Heath have a couple of Tacx Blue Matic for £70. Boxed and unused. Looked it up on Wiggle, looks like a decent no frills magnetic resistance trainer.

Phil, I have ridden up Hardknott and Wrynose a couple of years ago. There are a couple of 33% ramps on Hardknott, Wrynose is a little less harsh but still tough. I made it up both on two wheels with a mtb cassette, so I was on 34/32 by the top. Save your legs on the lower section of Hardknott, steep...

Steve - the studded tyres I have are only studded around the edges. At normal pressure the only difference when riding over non-icy stretches is that you hear the studs on the tarmac when cornering. If you reduce the tyre pressure so that studs are in contact with the surface constantly, then you he...
