Re: ONE-DAY RIDE to Weston -Super-Mare and back: Saturday 15th June
You could ride it as a club place-to-place record. ( Do we stll have those?) All you need is a timekeeper at the Black Horse and a turn marshal on Weston Pier. Think of the esnse of achievement doing it all on your Jack!

Re: ONE-DAY RIDE to Weston -Super-Mare and back: Saturday 15th June
That's a bit further than the original W&B, (claimed to be) exactly 200 miles. This was sraight down the A38 to Bristol, then round to Weston. Not a great deal of motorised traffic in those days. There were 2 caegories in the original, 15 & 18 hours and I got back in a little group clocking 14hrs 6 ...

Re: April TTs Appeal for volunteers
Remind me what an assistant timekeeper does. The assistant timekeeper helps the timekeeper with recording the times and rider numbers at the finish. There's no previous experience required and our 2 timekeepers are very friendly and don't bite. :D I guessed it was that. They were called Recorders b...

Good grief! Laps of Bartley Green Reservoir, starting from the Black Horse. I can remember doing that one June evening after being talked in to riding the Beacon Bash by John Cooper, a schoolmate. Got away in a break and ended up at the Beacon Clubroom in Maas Road where I filled in an application t...

Be careful in Kineton! Went there 60 or more years go with Mick DeMouilpied, Jimmy Arnold and others long forgotten. We stopped off in the pub for a pint and a sandwich and came out just in time to see someone backing his car in to Mick's bike, demolishing the handlebars. Mick went over to him and i...

Coffee at the Country Park sounds a bit of a bummer.
Way back when, the hill climb was held on the first Sunday in October and then it was all down to the Holly Bush for a couple of jars to welcome in the Social Season

Sorry George, not 'The Boot' but Alec Humm who was club secretary around that time.
I have a vague recollection that he emigrated to Australia later.

I can throw a bit of light on some of these, although most of them predate my Beacon membership. (1952) Pic 2: Closed circuit race, looks like Handsworth Park, though could be Dartmouth Park. Pic 6: Same circuit as pic2? The rider in the immediate foreground looks remarkably like Jimmy Arnold, altho...

I see you kids are taking the 'pretty' route. Well you are going in the summer, so you might as well enjoy it. Sadly, you will never experience the joy of queuing, wet and shivering, in the Black and White Transport Cafe at Patchway at 4,00am on a February Sunday, carefully stepping over the body of...

We did a lot of hostelling in the 1950's. Norman Adams led ten of us on a hostel tour of Southern Ireland in 1954, starting in Cork and finishing in Dublin. Other notable occasions were the Bonfire run to Welsh Bicknor and a New Years Eve celebration at Stow on the Wold. Most of the hostelling was i...

Such sad news about Norman. He was the club's leading short distance time trialist when I first joined the Beacon in 1952, but he was much more than just a racing man. He was a regular on club runs, often joining the club for lunch or tea when he had been racing in the morning, and a leading light o...

Sad news indeed.
For those who do not know, Graham was a past winner of our Mountain Time Trial, in the early 1960's, when the course was 62 miles and included a climb of Clee Hill. Graham won it with a 2hr 46 min ride, which remained as the record for that course.

The road was 'improved', some years ago,to make it safer, with hatchings in places preventing overtaking. I used to marshal some events there, and i think the consensus was that the improvements had actually made itmore dangerous for time'trialling. A far cry from the 1950's when the A449 was a sing...

David did his riding in the Beacon in the 50's and 60's> he was a flamboyant character, holder of many RRA Trike records, and later, of course, better known as a T de F commentator https://twitter.com/carltonkirby/status/7014...

A single fixed is ideal in wintry conditions, gives you far more control than riding a 'free',and doesn't involve arm and a leg' kit investment. You would rarely have seen a club rider out on gears in the winter months in the 50's - 60's, and they were almost universally used for time-trialling, up ...

We actually used to organise our own '50' championship in the 1950/ 60's, held on a variation of K36. Probably had a dozen or more entries and the event was properly marshalled by club members, and that from a much smaller membership than we have today. Also had our own '100' championship, organised...
