Thanks folks - but if you enter races with fewer and fewer opponents your probability of winning eventually rises to 100%. Well, I once timed an event in which Brian was the only competitor, and I'm pretty sure he still managed to be the slowest. There's a photo here of the whole site with the chal...

John, if you are going to plug your own work, it's no good being half-hearted about it.

For example, I would say that the following is a truly great read:

Most bizarre how he skips over the small detail of his wife as briefly as he can get away with it - no efforts to paint any sort of picture of her as a person. I think he set out to write a book describing the significance of cycling in his life, and his first wife was simply not terribly relevant ...

Tim Krabbe: De Renner (a cycling book), also available as a slightly wobbly translation The Rider . Spoorloos (a non-cycling book) also available as The Vanishing , which was made into a brilliant film Krabbe is Dutch writer. He was an international chess player in his youth, who took up bike racing...

August 1989, by tandem. A direct-ish route, about 900 miles, spread over eight days' riding, with a rest day in the middle. Left LE in a heatwave, arrived JoG wearing three jerseys and wishing I'd taken tights with me. Had the time of my life, nothing but cycling, eating and drinking every day. Star...

I only read the first LA book, which I found fascinating and nauseating in equal measure. You can't help but marvel at his determination and dedication, but it's equally hard to resist casting the book aside with angry declamations of American arrogance when you read passages such as that recounting...

Yes, I read that too and loved it. Started off thinking 'Who is this twat?' but was quickly won over. Anchovy pizza, budgies on a perch and excuses for not climbing (?)the Aubisque will not be forgotten quickly.
