I never rode it but went out to watch one year - 83 / 84 maybe. It's a patchy childhood memory but i remember Dean Baker emerging unscathed from the Earls Common Road Ford (i think) before falling off just down the road as a result of his pedal snapping off. It was a brilliantly entertaining event -...

My plan is to go to the Orangemabel Teamrooms on Alcester High Street. I've rung ahead so they're expecting us. I was annoyingly vague - told them to expect between 10 and 20 people between 11am and 12noon.

I've done my best!

Café locks are probably a good idea.

On the back of Phil's comment about standard length B runs I'll lead one on the 8th May to Alcester. Be about 55 miles towards the lower end of the B pace guidelines so C runners welcome. We could call it a B(b) run - 300k'ers feel free to organise a 2nd longer / stronger B run. If on the day there'...

Thankfully C runners generally don't form echelons or chase breakaways. There's usually a happy apathy that settles over the group if someone rides away on a hill.

C runs are often the first experience of group riding, and the Beacon, that new riders get. However inexperienced doesn't necessarily mean incapable. I agree that it should stick to a formula but I would prefer to educate any unruly riders rather than stitch them up by turning off and leaving them l...

Today's C runners were

Colin Groves (L)
Leoni Balder (I think I've got the surname wrong - even after asking)
Si Walker
Mark McConkey
Andy Wrightson
Colin Hall
John Deeley
Helen Jamieson
Rob Wade
Pete Norman - diverted off on the way to the cafe for an earlier finish.

Thanks all for your company.

Jordan - you'll probably surprise yourself. 14 - 15 mph average is fairly easily achievable in a group on a flatter route, although the wind might slow us down a bit. Might be an idea for anyone who hasn't been on a B run before to make themselves known to me at the Blackhorse so as a group we can k...

Andy - it'll be out via Branson's Cross, Ullenhall, Little Alne, Norton Lindsey and we'll scoot into Kenilworth past Hatton.

The shorter return leg will be via Baddesley Clinton, Hockley Heath and Earlswood.

Hope that helps.

Sundays B run to Kenilworth will be around 58 miles and not particularly hilly. I don't have many miles in my legs so far this year so the pace will probably sit towards the lower end of the B run guidelines. This might be a good opportunity for any confident C runners who want to try a B run to tag...

Seems to me separation through infrastructure is key, most of my near misses are as a result of driver impatience coupled with a lack of room. I doubt driver behaviour will be easily altered. And I guess infrastructure doesn't come cheap. I'd come to work every day by bike but in the winter there's ...

I think Helen you refer to the particularly foul weather C run recently where we were all affected to varying degrees by a drop off in braking efficiency(especially Tom at the bottom of Weatheroak - but that's another story!). I have disc, caliper and cantilever braked bikes and for me cantilever gi...

Hi Helen I bought an Eastway last year to commute on. It's taken a hammering on the tow paths and so far has proven pretty bullet proof. Old school road bike geometry and very comfortable. Mine has cantilever brakes and lots of clearance but they do disc brake bikes for less than a grand. Got mine o...

I saw one other Beacon member, I shouted hello but he might have thought me a bit odd as I wasn't in club colours.
