I was given "Mountain High: Europe's 50 Greatest Cycle Climbs" by Daniel Friebe and Chris Goding for Christmas. Great photos, interesting narrative, plus maps, profiles and stats. Ideal armchair reading for the winter months. A big hardcover book and a snip at £10 on Amazon.

Don't make my mistake and try and use a 10-speed SRAM powerlink with a 10-speed Shimano chain. I used to have one of those and used it successfully on audaxes and the like for about 5 years. No maps and limited to 50 waypoints per route. Can be used for cycling but then again, things have moved on. If you want a GPS for hiking and cycling, the eText Vista HCx is a good one to go for.

Wheels go in padded wheel bags then into the main bag. Flew with BMI baby who have an 18kg weight limit for bikes.

Still does (almost) everything I need. Annoyingly, they have changed the route editor - the very useful 'remove segment' control has gone.

your rear mech will have a maximum size sprocket it can take, so a mountain bike cassette (32 , 34 or even 36) might not be possible
