the rider before Simon (no52) had a big gear and had had to "tack" his way up the hill :!: he was overtaken by about 3 riders in the process from a long way down.

Lots of differing techniques to get up the hill; some even stayed on the tri-bars, many held the centre of the bars. Most got out the saddle just before the crest. Only one walker.
and on the 7th day God created CLEATS..!

This might have been the rider whose rear mech stuck on the small cog. At the top of Ankerdine he swapped his bike for his parent's tandem and rode that to the finish.
