Thurs 2 Oct 2014: Openstreetmap talk at Rednal Social Club
Members are invited to attend a presentation and Q&A session on Openstreetmap (www.openstreetmap.org) at the Rednall Social Club (upstairs), at 7.30pm Thurs 2nd Oct 2014. The presentation will be given by Andy Robinson and other members of the Openstreetmap organisation.
What is openstreetmap? In short its a social mapping system. It has grown from nothing to a rich multi-layered and dynamic map-based Geographical Information System in just 10 years. All through the power of users around the world and all for free. In many geographical areas it far exceeds Google and other online maps both in quantity and quality of information and is massively more dynamic.
Further information can be found here:
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org
Exact agenda to be determined but requests and suggestions are very welcome.
One topic I would like to see covered:
Many of the online and Sat-nav navigation systems that we use are based upon openstreetmap, and many of us have added and edited it. But navigation systems are only as good as their mapping base. While most roads/tracks/paths are now mapped, there is a need to add qualitative data (via tags) to the map features, such as road surface, quality, bicycle access etc. This can sometimes be a little confusing, so it would be good to learn about the most relevant tags for cyclists and how to input and manage them.
Please indicate if you plan to attend.

Unfortunately Charlie does not have his screen, but I am hopeful a non-member friend may have one. As a last resort I will have to rent. Any idea where from?
Is there a wifi at the club? I suspect not. So we will attempt to do stuff offline, but will almost certainly need internet access at some stage. From experience what is the mobile reception like there? I have a Vodafone smartphone for wifi hotspot and a Orange dongle for my laptop.

In the days of steam, coal fires and local corner shops, the University was overwhelmed with portable screens and projectors that could have been borrowed for such an occasion. Unfortunately lecture rooms now come fully fitted. Otherwise I would have helped.

I honestly don't know having only ever been up there twice in the past 5 years. Any of the regulars know?laurence_cooley wrote:Did you establish that there's not a white wall upstairs in the club, Barry? The projector works perfectly well without a screen if you have a suitable wall.
I might pop in on my way in to town tonight

Agreed, a great evening and I'm still in amazement at the level of commitment from those guys and the thousands of others that contribute to make OSM what it is.laurence_cooley wrote:Great event, Barry; thanks for organising it. I'm glad that I managed to make it after all.

Thanks to Andy and the rest of the OSM crew for coming to talk to us, to Laurence and my mate Joe for the projector and screen, and for everyone who attended.
Hopefully all enjoyed what was for me a fascinating evening. The whole point of the exercise was to show that we, as roving knowledgeable cyclists, have a very important role to play in the development of OSM/social-mapping, for the benefit of us and every one else.
I know many people wanted to come and couldn't make it, so if demand warrants it, we could put another one on next year, but with a bit more practical/tutorial on how to add and edit OSM from real simple (writing a email to the OSM cords), through to adding map notes, through to advanced editing.

Thanks for organising it Barry, most enjoyable and reinvigorated my interest in mapping. I've just had a look at my profile and see that my first edit was based on my track of the 2010 Snowdrop Audax. I haven't contributed for over 3 years so will see if I can find something to add but the level of detail added in the last 3 years is staggering.
