It's that time of year again to think of the February escape, rolling hills, fine food and fantastic company. You may think you read the same last year - well you did except this time it's at a new location.

We will be staying at Wern Watkin 5 star bunkhouse, for more details please look at their website www.wernwatkin.co.uk

I am now taking names and deposits.

The accommodation cost will £44.00 per person for two nights plus a modest charge for the meal in on Saturday evening, menu to be revealed nearer to the time.

Please post below if you would like to go and let me have a deposit of £20.00 per person, cheques to be made payable to 'Beacon R C C'.

It would be great to welcome some new people as well as the loyal regulars.

If you would like to know more please send me a pm or telephone on 01527 834921.

Hello

As with previous years Dave Cole has very kindly volunteered to do a mass fish and chips collection for us all. As these will have to be ordered in advance please add your requirements below, for example:-

Tone and Jane fish and chips twice plus 1 portion of mushy peas.

Regarding travel, I'm planning to be on the train that gets to Ledbury at 10:57, departs University 09:55, Bromsgrove 10:10. I'll then ride from Ledbury, stopping at a pub for lunch after about an hour. The ride is about 45 miles from Ledbury to Wern Watkin.

I'll be riding whatever the weather / road conditions. My route includes about 20 miles of B road and about 25 miles of lanes and cycle paths.

For the return trip, I'll probably do the same in reverse without the pub stop or, if I fancy a different route, NCN46 which goes to Ledbury via Hereford also providing the option to catch the train from Hereford which is only about 35 miles.

There's generally both a ride and a walk. Personally I normally go for a ride unless it's icy or very wet in which case I've done the walk, and would do so again if I was faced with being the only one going for a ride.

I have a selection of gentle circular routes (approx 40 miles) planned stopping at either Usk or Blaenavon. For each destination there are options involving more or less of the Monmouthshire & Brecon Cycle Route (which looks like it has an excellent surface) and I've printed maps of each option to reach a consensus depending on weather and mood. The off-road & on-road routes are very similar so it would be easy to switch if for example the cycle route turned out to be tedious.

I will lead an easy walk from the bunkhouse; approximately 7.6 miles. Some canal towpath walking plus a stop for lunch in Crickhowell.

Nearly time for our first visit to the 5 star luxury bunk house that is Wern Watkin. The format will be much the same as at Springhill last year, fish and chips on the Friday evening and the traditional fine feast on Saturday of :-

A glass of bubbly and nibbles to start

For the main course a delicious lamb tagine with cous cous. To be accompanied by whatever beverage alcoholic or otherwise you choose to bring.

Followed by the famous Cartmel Sticky Pudding with either custard or cream

Tea or coffee

Here are a few reminders of stuff to bring for the weekend:

Torch
Food for breakfast, packed lunch, snacks etc.
Drinks
Towels
Money

Things provided:

Bed linen and pillows

To save there being several cartons of milk etc. I will bring for a bulk supply of :-

Milk (semi skinned)
Sugar
Tea bags
Coffee
Red and brown sauce
Vinegar
Salt & pepper
Kitchen roll
Tin foil
Napkins

The bunkhouse is available to us from 4pm. on Friday. The owner of the bunkhouse is happy for cars to be parked outside the front doors for unloading but request they be moved to the parking area afterwards.

I look forward to seeing you all there on Friday.

Great weekend, great company. Thanks to Jane and all the team involved.

On a re-count we made £65 with the red noses so thanks to everyone for supporting. When I counted up last night there was £55. Surely it couldn't be that I made a mistake, after all I hardly had a drop to drink!

That is what a cycling club is all about. Dedicated athletes being coached in a disciplined and controlled environment. I particularly liked the no alcohol ruling and the punishing yet rewarding Saturday ride.
Thanks to the coaching staff particularly Tony, Jane and especially the Cordon Bleu trained chefs, headed by Deb Le-Deane, that were obviously used. A nice touch.
One small complaint, some of the so called athletes didn't respect the 10.30 lights out ruling as strictly as they aught to. Shame on you Dave Cole. Presidential role is to be respected, not just ceremonial.
