Post-lockdown Salt and Cotswold Beacon Audax (hopefully)

Post by Philip Whiteman » 04 Nov 2020 15:32

This audax ought to be called 'Shifting Sands' in honour of fluctuating government policy.

Salt and Cotswold is the final audax of 2020 and all being well, will take place on 5th December.

Hopefully the first audax outing after the end of the second lockdown (fingers crossed). This x rated event starts from Droitwich Lido and follows a reasonably gentle route before rising up onto the Cotswold plateau and an easy return from Tewkesbury. Controls: Shipston on Stour; Witney; Tewkesbury plus 2 info controls.

Entries open on 5th November. https://audax.uk/event-details?eventId=8786

POST EVENT ROUND-UP

It is was cold, it was wet and some people rode to the start through snow on St Kenelm’s Pass. Nonetheless, I was surprised by such a good turnout. The day turned out fine for weather and I hope the sun took away some of the chilliness for you though I rather suspect that stage 4 from Tewkesbury was rather on the cold side. If you did not ride today, we will have plenty of audaxes next year.

All the comments received so far suggest that it was a grand day out in the not quite warm sunshine. Any feedback on the route would be gratefully received as the event may be repeated next year.

Submitting your proofs-of-passage

The deadline for submission is 19th December.

• If you used the new E-brevet, please remember to press ‘upload’ in settings and do not rely on the last press of Droitwich as confirmation. I am sure that the App developers, Caroline and Dave Fenton would appreciate feedback and views on the App. If you have any comments on the app then please send them to me. I will forward them on to the developers at AUK.

• If you used a GPS track, please send me the file and not a Strava link as they need to be run through validation software.

• If you used selfies, please send me your images along with answers or images for the information controls.

• If you used a hard brevet card and collected receipts, either scan them and send me the images or forward them by post to: Philip Whiteman, 2 Drayton Terrace, Drayton, Belbroughton, Stourbridge DY9 0BW.

If you used electronic proofs of passage but would like a validation sticker for your brevet card then please let me know and I will place one in the post. Worthy of note is the additional proof of passage provided by Paul Jennings via a Youtube video, though I am not quite sure that AUK are ready yet to include this method in their regulations. Some of you feature in the video too!

Beacon Audaxes 2021

The plans are currently with the AUK Regional Events Secretary and hopefully the entry pages will go live soon. There are a mix of normal with facilities and x rated events.

• Begwyns, Books and Stones – 17th April – confirmed. This x rated audax is postponed from November. This ride has ups and downs with plenty of flat stuff between. The route is: Stourport; Wyre Forest; Kington;, through the Begwyns to Erwood before following the Wye Valley to Hay; the megalithic Arthur’s Stones via The Scar; Weobley, The Teme Valley and back to Stourport. Some of you are already registered on a commuted entry from the postponed event . https://ridewithgps.com/routes/33993917

• Gospel Pass Skivers – Friday 14th May tbc. Brand new event for people who want a long week or tell the boss that they are working from home. It is x-rated. The title is a dead give away on the destination. The last half is probably the most challenging as it returns via Woolhope. Bewdley – Clee Hill – Ludlow – Hay-on-Wye – Gospel Pass – deepest darkest Herefordshire – Suckley Hills, the Beast of Ankerdine – Bewdley. This event has already generated quite some interest. https://ridewithgps.com/routes/34702797

• The Kidderminster Killer – 24th July - confirmed. An audax with more facilities! Following complaints about this event being too flat, the 2021 route has been amended meaning that riders will no longer have to be bored ascending Shatterford or the bit between Montgomery and Leintwardine. So new additions include Sheepwalks, The Cwm and a return to the Fiddler’s Elbow. 3.75AAA. Belbroughton – Church Stretton – Montgomery – Chapel Lawn – Ludlow – Belbroughton. Pain and exhaustion are included in the entry fee. https://ridewithgps.com/routes/33297530

• Summer mid-week Brevet Randonnee 100km event tba. Date and route to be confirmed by fellow Beacon RCC audax organiser, Phil Richards.

• Beyond the Dyke – 2nd October tbc. This event was originally run by the late Alan Mason and is a great route taking in the Marches and valleys beyond Knighton . It is mildly hilly and varying scenery. Food and refreshments at the start and finish. Belbroughton – Craven Arms via the side of Brown Clee – Knucklas viaduct – Dolau - Presteigne – Teme Valley – Belbroughton. https://ridewithgps.com/routes/34675201

Look forward to seeing you again.

Kind regards
