Begwyns, Books and Stones (again) - NOW OPEN TO ENTRIES. - 17th April 21

Post by Philip Whiteman » 07 Dec 2020 19:53

This Beacon RCC event opened to entries this evening and is already a quarter full!

West is best from Stourport. This event is a postponed from the November lockdown. An x rated event with great countryside. Places are limited to 30 with riders set off at allocated start times.

This audax goes to the rarely visited Begwyns before heading back to Hay on Wye and up to Arthur's Stones. There are several hilly sections but with plenty of flatter respites in between. It is out via the Wyre Forest and The Marches before crossing the Begwyns to reach the Wye Valley. From Hay it is a big climb to Arthur's Stones, a megalithic monument, before taking the gentle rolling coutryside to Leominster and eventually The Teme Valley. The route predominantly follows a mixture of good lanes and B roads. Hilly yet rewarding ride with early spring colours and bleating lambs.

As an X Rated ride it is no thrills in terms of facilities but the route is scenic with passages through the Wyre Forest, across The Marches, over the Begwyns, into the Wyre Valley, up to Arthur's Stones and back along the Teme Valley. All controls are free controls allowing you to choose where to stop and hang-out. In addition to traditional brevet cards, GPS track files, E-Brevet and selfies will be accepted as proofs of passage, which need to be sent to the organiser after the event.

Distance: 208km

Climbing: 3,000m but not Audax Altitude Award eligible.

Start and Finish: Stourport-on-Severn

Controls:
- Kington (cake loaded cafes)
- Hay on Wye (book loaded cafes)
- Leominster (coffee and kebab shops)
+ two information controls at Erwood (where there is a cafe) and Arthur's Stones (where there are some large stone picnic tables).
