Updates and Covid Related Changes to the 2021 Audaxes

Post by Philip Whiteman » 26 Mar 2021 14:32

Update on the Begwyns (just), Books (not likely) and Stones Audax - 17th April - X Rated Audax*

Having postponed this event once, I was damned if I was going to do it again.

Asynchronous Covid regulations between England and Wales means that whilst the event can go ahead in England and it will be possible to cross the border by that date, events of up to thirty, gatherings of more than six people from two households and a lack of open cafes, has resulted in the Welsh portion of this event being no longer possible. At this point, you probably now realise that there is a maze of complexity to consider when thinking about cross border events.

The audax will still take place on the 17th April albeit with a heavily amended but no less attractive route. Instead of heading into Mid-Wales, the audax will now traverse Wenlock Edge before crossing the eastern end of the Begwyns at Brilley Mountain, within a few feet of the Welsh border. It will then bypass Hay-on-Wye and head straight for the Arthur's Stones before the homeward journey to Stourport via Leominster

New Controls:
- Hurley (info control);
- Craven Arms;
- Kington;
- Whitney on Wye Toll Bridge (info control);
- Arthur's Stones (info control);
- Leominster.

Topography:
- The south Shropshire hills via Ditton Priors;
- Passages across Wenlock Edge with commensurate climbing;
- An easy bit through The Marches down to Kington;
- Up and over the Begwyns via Brilley Mountain.;
- From the Golden Valley, a brutal climb to Arthur's Stones for a rewarding view from these megalithic stones;
- Gentle ups and down via Leominster, Leysters and the along the Teme Valley back to Stourport.

This event is over-subscribed and no spaces remain.

Update on Gospel Pass Skivers - 14th May - X Rated Audax*

This may be postponed by a week subject to what is decided ahead on the next steps of the Welsh Government's lockdown process. Otherwise, it may be possible to route the event via the English side of Hay Bluff on a climb equal to Gospel Pass albeit less spectacular.

This event is over-subscribed and no spaces remain.

Update on The Kidderminster Killer - 24th July

This event is now 75% without much advertising. If Wales remains a problem destination then a minor deviation to the route will keep the audax on the English side of the border. However, this remains a low risk.

There is no Clee to Heaven audax this year

Update on Beyond the Dyke

Nothing to report

*X rated audaxes are no thrills and low cost events, starting and finishing from a public car park

Great work, Phil - looking forward to all of these.

...errr, but just noticed how hilly the Begwyns is for the first one of the year...gulp!
