RIDE IN THE WHEEL TRACKS OF THE GREATS!

Post by George » 04 Apr 2022 10:35

Hopefully, everyone already knows that the Beacon's Little Mountain Time Trial is coming up on Sunday 24 April. If you're one of the many who have already entered or volunteered to help, many thanks. See you on the 24th! If not, please take a couple of minutes to read this message.

How about giving it a go?
Maybe you think that time-trialling isn't your thing, or that you'll be too slow. But the LMTT isn't like other TTs. Yes, you pin on a number and get a time at the end, but it's a race you can treat like a challenge ride, a course that roadies can enjoy and thrive on, a route that takes you through some of the best scenery in the Midlands. There's always a great atmosphere with roadside support and real camaraderie amongst competitors. The LMTT is an event you've got to do at least once. Get it ticked off your bucket list, or you'll always regret it! Entries close on 9 April (coming Saturday). For details see http://beaconrcc.org.uk/2022-little-mou ... ime-trial/.

Not racing? Come along anyway!
We've now got a full complement of marshals, but there's usually stuff that needs doing at the HQ. Or what about leading a club run to the top of Stanford Bank or Ankerdine to watch, then rolling down to the HQ for tea and cake? The organising team can be contacted on lmtt@beaconrcc.org.uk. Chief marshal Chris Hudson can be called or messaged on 07980859741.

Please don't put on competing activities!
One of the Beacon's traditions is that LMTT day is all about the LMTT. We don't put on club runs, except runs that go to the LMTT. And we don't organise any other activities. So everyone can focus exclusively on the event. Whether you're a racer or a pootler, a tourist or a commuter, a roadie or a trackie, an ardent audaxer or a cushy café rider, please keep 24 April clear for the LMTT!

Why the LMTT matters
We often call the LMTT our 'flagship event'. I like that description, for a couple of reasons. First, because it reflects the fact that the LMTT is a big part of why the wider cycling community knows us. Second, because the LMTT represents what our club is all about. The LMTT is adventurous and different, competitive but friendly, modern but rich in tradition. It's also the embodiment of our club spirit: an event with a national profile acquired by loads of Beacon members pulling together to make it work.

What makes the LMTT special
Beacon RCC was formed in 1946; the Mountain Time Trial started in 1948. So it's almost as old as the club. And it's integral to the fabric of the club. When it was created, the MTT was a unique event: nothing like it had ever been promoted in the UK. Over the years, it's attracted Olympians, (future) World Champions, and many of the biggest names in UK cycle sport. Every competitor rides round in the wheel tracks of the greats! Take a look at http://www.beaconrcc.org.uk/old_site/op ... story.html. There's also a fair amount about the event in our 75th anniversary souvenir booklet. See http://beaconrcc.org.uk/75th-anniversar ... r-booklet/.

The LMTT is a big deal. Let's keep it that way!

I will have to send my apologies for that weekend due to leave. I hope it goes well.
