Ankerdine by the Pros

Post by Missiles » 12 Sep 2007 15:05

OK, so let's have a little quiz to see who can guess most accurately the time it took the breakaway group of the Tour of Britain to climb Ankerdine today:

- John and I timed them exactly the same as for our Little Mountain.
- Dan Soltys (Wrekinsport CC), who holds the record for the combined climbs in our event, rode up Ankderdine in 3.24 this year.
- Stuart Dangerfield did it in 3.22 in 2004.
- Everyone reported that they seemed to be taking it easy up there today.

So, what is your guess for the time they did today? Who's going to go first?

ok, as you said they seemed to be taking it easy and i really couldn't tell as i was taking photos i'll have a guess at 3.10. My thinking is that riding up that hill solo is harder than a bunch. Also they are professional cyclists who ride for a living and they had a big crowd cheering them on. They should really have gone up quicker than 3.22 but i wouldn't be suprised if you say they were slower.

I reserve the right to decline any prize involving 39 miles of pain in the highly unlikely event that I'm closest.

I thought the bunch came up fairly steady (they certainly seemed to have time to call and wave to me), but the break were doing a fair lick. Hammond definitely looked as though he was hurting. And I'd guess that not only are these guys a notch or two above the likes of Soltys, but he was riding a TT, where he's presumably pacing himself a bit in the interests of a good overall time. Today, I'd think the pros in the break kicked on the hill to try and shake one or two off. So I'm guessing that they went up in less than 3 minutes. If a precise time is needed, I'd say 2.57.

Yes, I've just come in search of the answer to the very same question ... which, incidentally, has also been posed as far afield as Australia.

So, spill the beans, Ruth: how swift was Swift?

Right, well let's just check on everyone's bids and make sure nobody wants to change their mind...........

(Oh, and I should add that I've spotted that Dangerfield climbed Ankerdine in 3.12 in 2000, so I think that's the fastest it's been done as part of the LMTT.)

2.30 Adrian
2.48 Steve
2.55 Neil H
2.57 Ed
2.59 Colin
3.10 Neil C
3.13 Richard
3.35 Phil
4.06 John H

Brian, you can't guess the same time as Neil (3.10) and he got there first so what are you going to go for?

And George, you can't guess the same as Ed (2.57). What's your new bid?

Anyone else want to guess? Anyone want to change their mind?

Ah, I hadn't noticed that clash ... I thought I was choosing a unique time. Now, if I go for any other time in the just-under-3-minutes range, I can only win if I'm absolutely spot on. But if I go up or down a few seconds, I could be closest without being exactly right. So I'm going to say 3.04. (And, Brian, you just keep out of my 'bracket', alright?)

By the way, what's the prize?

2.59 Colin
3.03 Charles
3.04 George
3.10 Neil C
3.13 Richard

Any more for any more? I'll donate a free entry to next year's LMTT to the winner. :D
