Race Report
WMCCL round 2 – Redditch Road and Path CC – Sunday 16 Oct 2019

We’ve not had much rain recently, and that meant the course on Sunday for the second round of the WMCCL was hard, dry and fast! The course at Redditch is around the outside of the running track, the football pitch and into an adjacent meadow but they did manage to find some tricky little steep ascents and it’s quite twisty in places. There’s one set of hurdles, where most people dismounted and ran across, although Isla Roundtree and others did bunny-hop them, and there’s a section of cross camber that is very slippery in the wet! It’s quite a fun course, but like all cyclocross racing, it’s tiring!

We had a total of 10 riders racing across the day. Louie Kennedy came 18th (00:15:42), and Oliver Durose 19th (00:15:53) in the Under 10s race early in the day.

Three Beacon riders raced in the Mens Vet 50+ race in a field of 84 riders. Nic Vipond V50 looked like he was going strong, but an unfortunate slip on the cross camber on his third lap knocked his rear derailleur and his bike wouldn’t stay in a gear after that, so he retired. Adrian Ravenscroft, V50, did 6 laps in 00:47:20 and came 66th, and Steve Croggon, V55, did 7 laps coming in 34th in a time of 00:50:09.

We only had one Beacon woman racing in a field of 33 riders. Helen Jamieson, V40, still races on her mountain bike, but may be persuaded to join the dropped bar gang someday! She finished 27th, one lap down on the winner.

The final race of the day is the largest, with 126 on the start line and includes Juniors, U23, Senior, V40 and V45 men. Four Beacon men lined up at the start and we had a mixed bag of results, George Lazenby wasn’t feeling his best and valiantly battled through 3 laps, but retired on his fourth looking rather drained. Ben Beauchamp, V40, had a slow first lap, but then flew around the course to finish 44th (00:53:40) and Neil Pellowe, Senior, had a pretty consistent race and finished 89th (00:58:31). Race of the day has to go to Stuart White, Senior, who fought his way from the back of the grid to finish 41st (00:53:23), despite a couple of hairy moments on tyres that most people wouldn’t race on!

The next round is on 6 October in Henley-in-Arden
If you’re all about the destination, take a f#€king flight!
