WMCCL round 4 – Solihull CC, Heart of England Conference Centre

Well, what a race day that was! Normally, the section of the course people dread at the Heart of England Conference Centre is the sand pit….. well not this time! The ground was so wet that the sand was one of the easier parts! There was mud, mud, mud galore!!! It coated bikes and riders alike, and made large sections of the course un-ridable for all but the strongest/lightest/most skilled riders, with everyone else doing hike-a-bike, or trudge for some of us! The section through the woods started out rather pleasant but half way through the women’s race it was starting to get very rutted with exposed roots, both just waiting to snatch the wheels of any unsuspecting, tired riders! A number of our senior riders had close encounters with the ground in that section!!
We had no youth or juniors racing this week, so the first race the scarlet, white and green of Beacon was represented in was the men’s Vet 50+. There were 77 racers in total and Nic Vipond (V50) put in another strong ride to finish 18th over all and 11th in his category, completing 6 laps in 00:48:58. Steve Croggon (V55) finished 39th and 12th in his category, completing 5 laps in 00:42:35. Bringing up the Beacon rear was Adrian Ravenscroft (V50), 47th overall, 25th in his category and completing 5 laps in 00:45:20.
The next race was the women’s, and we had a single Beacon representative in a field of 24. Helen Jamieson (V40) valiantly completed 4 laps in 00:52:38, to finish 23rd overall and 5th in her category.
The final race of the day was by far the largest. 122 riders lined up on the start line for the men’s seniors and V40 race. Beacon had 3 riders successfully negotiate to the finish, in a race that saw 7 DNF. Roger Cutler (Senior) had a cracking race, completing 6 laps in 00:51:00, to finish 30th overall and 14th in his category. George Lazenby (V45) finished a lap down, completing 5 laps in 00:53:25 and finished 110th, 31st in his category. Our final finisher of the day was Simon Woods (V40), he completed 5 laps in 01:00:29, to finish 114th, and 29th in his category.
The next round is 20th October at Newport Rugby Club.
If you’re all about the destination, take a f#€king flight!
