Safe Routes to Schools Bournville Area

Post by Dave Cox » 09 Nov 2015 12:01

Hi,

A friend of mine who is also the Honorary Legal Advisor to CTC Council lives locally and is beginning a campaign to improve routes to Schools in the Bournville Area. A bit late for me as my children are 40 and 43 but I certainly support this of the next generation. If you live in the area whether or not you have children or grandchildren you might be interested if so please contact Shivaji details below :-

Hi,

With a few local families and some helpful cycle campaigners, I am
pulling together a campaign for a radial cycle route that would link a
number of god cycle/walking routes in and around Bournville and in the
process create:

(i) Safe Routes to School in Bournville;

(ii) better links to traffic free routes such as the canal towpath and
the Rea Valley trail.

The principles are those of the Space for Cycling Campaign as
described here: http://pushbikes.org.uk/space4cycling

Essentially, we want conditions on our roads where anyone, of any age
or ability, feels able to cycle safely, conveniently and enjoyably for
any local journey. Bournville is already a great place to live and
given BVT's environmental commitment and longstanding progressive
stance, I hope that this is a good area in which to demonstrate what
Birmingham as a whole could be like with good quality transport
infrastructure of the sort proposed by Space for Cycling.

Pushbikes (Birmingham Cycle Campaign) are supporting this and
following a recent meeting:

- we have a list of potential improvements as a starting point, and

- a friendly transport engineer has offered to draw up some plans.

I have also made an initial approach to BVT. Before doing more I
would like to be able to refer to named Bournville residents who share
my view that this would be useful. I have a few names but would like
to have a healthy number - including some of the children and young
people who would use this route.

So, can I sign you up - for free - as a member of 'Safe Routes to
School Bournville' (or whatever we end up calling it?

If you have any questions, please let me know. If you think this is a
good idea and know others who would be interested, please pass on the
request above.

Thanks

Shivaji
