Bicycle travel bag recommendations

Post by slogfester » 28 Jul 2010 15:04

Can anyone recommend or give some top tips on travel bags suitable for a (valuable!) road bike on planes. Not so long a go, there were only a few on the market, but I noticed when I was in Majorca in March that there are now loads of different types/shapes/sizes.
I used to carry mine in standard airline bicycle (cardboard) boxs, but am fed up with all the pre+apres stuffing around (excuse the pun) and I am about to carry bike on 3 different trips.
Thanks

I've used a padded bike bag many times with no problems. Use bubble wrap on the rear mech etc. but no need to overdo it. Wheels (in bags) either side of the frame will provide most of the protection. If you're that bothered about the odd scrape then leave the bike at home!

I have one of those DHB bags. It provides good protection and it was good value for money compared to other bags. I was attracted to it partly because it's bigger than most, and I thought it would mean I didn't have to mess with the saddle height, etc. However, I found that it was actually too big. There's lots of room over, so if you don't want the bike to slide around inside you've either got to pad it out or (what I did) fold the top over and strap it up.
