Depends whether you want a rooftop carrier or a rear mounted carrier and of course what type of car it's for. I went for the rooftop one because I needed frequent boot access during a few days' journey. Also as I already had roof bars it was fairly economical. If I change the car the only thing that would need to be replaced is the brackets for the bars.
Rear mounted carriers are good if you already have a towbar but expensive if you need to add a towbar just for the purpose.
Boot mounted carriers are fairly cheap but I'm not sure how confident I'd be about the cheapest protecting the car's paintwork. I think you may have to remove the bike for access to the boot though - maybe depends on the car.
