wheels

Post by Tim » 29 Dec 2011 21:00

Looking to upgrade my mavic aksium race wheels at some point in the next twelve months. Budget lowish as relatively new to cycling.

These Pro-Lite Bracciano Wheels look pretty light for the price?

Any thoughts welcome.

Cheers

Tim,

I would say that those are a pretty good wheel set to be honest and I really rate Pro-Lite wheels, having had a set for twelve months now.

Interesting Video

But keep an eye on the prices elsewhere, because you will find cheaper.

That said, you may also wish to consider the Shimano RS80 wheels, a little bit more expensive, but maybe a better wheel? I've had my RS80's 18 months and ridden many hundreds of miles on them, lovely wheels.

OK. Here's one. Wheel manufacturers should quote the (polar) moment of inertia of a wheel as well as its overall weight.

So a year has passed and I still dont have the cash! But if I do find some are there any other better budget choice than these suggested by Alan as a summer/racing wheel?

http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/sp/road-t ... HIMWHFR385

In october my 4year old mavics that came with the bike were deemed "lethal" and "worse worn out rims example Ive seen" so had to get some Shimano R500s as urgent replacements that will now be my winter wheels.

£300ish is really very top of my budget

If you are racing then an deep section wheel is usually your best bet.
Planet X wheels offer the best value for money, never seen a poor review of them.

I also have a pair of these and know plenty of people that have them and everyone I know really rate these wheels. In fact I used mine when we rode LeJoG back in 2010 having only purchased them two days before hand. So nearly a 1000 mile road test in 10 days straight out of the box would deem them as passing the test!!!

If you shop around you will get them for sub £300 including P&P. I know that Planet X were doing an offer on them before Christmas?

But you may also want to consider THESE wheels?

I also have a pair of these as well, like most Shimano factory built wheels, they are pretty much bomb proof.

Exact same hub and spoke arrangement as the RS80 and give little away in terms of overall weight, but will save you £80?

Cheers both. The planet x look v good value for what you get and both the shimanos look decent. I didnt think any deep rims were available under £700+ a pair.

So
Ultegras 1652g £225
Fulcrum Racing 3 1650g £300
Shim RS80 1521g £320
Planet X 52mm Clincher 1800g £399
Planet X 50mm Tubs 1450g £399

So yep for me who might only do 5-10 circuit races this year (if Im lucky) and some longer rides think Ultegras or R380s might be the way to go.

How much faster would the deep rims / Planet X Tubs be??? £80-180faster?!? Plus would the tubs be more hassle?

Birthday coming up soon, will ask for cash off the mrs and take it from there!

While I love the look of deep section carbon wheels and yes they are faster than normal wheels there is a trade off IMHO.

The deeper the section the more likely they are to be affected by side winds etc. They also tend to be a heavier than std deep rims, (especially if you go for clinchers) so not really that suitable for hilly terrain, unless you would consider yourself to be a strong rider.

But the biggest concern for me is braking in wet or damp conditions, even with specific carbon pads the braking is not very good/non existent!

For the money the RS80 wheels will do absolutely everything and as a comparison look at the Mavic Ksyrium SR wheels that are over £800 a pair yet they are only 76g lighter!!

HERE

But its personal choice at the end of the day isnt it, and you see those Planet X wheels everywhere and I have never heard a bad word said about them.

Spent the cash at Venture. Hope hubs/mavic openpro rims. Going for handbuilt by Ben and keeping the cash in Birmingham and Lancashire appealed. After 1mile I am 110% happy!

c£360-400 (exc skewers, tubes, tyres etc). I also bought tyres and tubes, and couple of tools off Ben too so my bill was more £500.

They are off the bike now awaiting better weather!

Are your RS10s in need of replacement, Martin? Mine are pretty much dead after six months.

I wouldn't say dead, just thinking about upgrading. You've done a lot more riding than me over the last six months, too.
