Shimano chains for Triples
Thursday I visited 3 shops in search of new chains for Ultegra and 105 equipped bikes. When I came to fit the Ultegra one I found that the spec has changed since I last changed them and the new CN-6701 chains are not recommended for triples. Neither is CN 5701. I'll have to take them back and search for prev generation 6600 on internet. Apparently the slotted side plates can't take the potential stretch.

Apparently the newer chains do not have as much sideways flexibility. They say that a triple needs a chain with more flex because of the less straight chain lines that are possible. It strikes me that if you avoid large chain wheel/small sprocket or small chain wheel/large sprocket combinations then it's not going to be an issue.

You need to use a CN-7801 or CN-6600 chain. KMC should work too though

Interesting, as I have been using the "new" CN-6701 chains on my Ultegra 6600 triple ever since theses chains came out and have had no problems at all?Dave Cox wrote:Thursday I visited 3 shops in search of new chains for Ultegra and 105 equipped bikes.
