Just entered world of Apple with an iPad (with retina display version). Is it not possible to download rides to it with a USB adapter of some sort?
According to this the answer is no

so just wondered if Garmin edge would work through it or something similar. Frustrating! Upgrade to 510 or 810 needed then!

I've joined the Android (Nexus 7) club - and I have managed to download and upload tracks successfully - eTrex30 and Forerunner 310XT (using ANT+). A couple of cheap apps are needed as well as a USB adapter cable - total cost about £10, and I also get the ability to connect up USB sticks etc.

There is a garmin connect app that downloads your data using Bluetooth to the iPad. Not sure whether 500 is Bluetooth, but the app is compatible with the majority of garmin edge products.

Thanks but 500 is not compatible, think it's just 510 & 810 edge models
