Do you rotate tyres?

Post by slogfester » 25 Feb 2014 18:33

Surprised to find a significant difference in wear on my tyres (Conti 4 seasons 700 x 25) after just 2800 km. Or, put another way, the front looks hardly ridden! Normal? (I have not really run a 'winter' bike here before). I guess there has been more than usual rubbish on the roads this year.

Do people rotate their tyres? I once had a mate who didn't, arguing that he's rather have a blow out on a rear! FWIW, I do and have!

I personally dont bother as the rear one tends to "square" of anyway.

No, would never put a part worn tyre on the front.

I agree with Alan. If you have more than very slight wear on your back tyre, when you move it to the front, the flat section down the middle affects handling in corners. (And I'm crap enough at cornering already, without complicating things further.)

Move front to rear and put a brand new tyre on the front.

Thx for comments.
Interesting. So do you think the left is no good. Blimey, less than 3000 km. The picture shows the only damaged part of the tyre. The rest is OK, just worn down.
Having ridden motorcycles all my life I am familiar with rears flattening/squaring out, but have not noticed on bicycles before. (And of course, you cant rotate on motorbikes!). I'll keep a careful eye on the front handling, but felt no ill effects when out today.

OK, have ordered a replacement. Must say I am a little shocked how fast it has worn down. Maybe I need to cut down on the cake consumption!

Thx for all comments- it is another reason the Beacon is such a great club, having wiser more experienced riders online.
With a few exceptions....

Dr Whiteman, here is your coat

If in doubt, see what the great man had to say on the subject:
