Gear cable for Ultegra 6800

Post by slogfester » 06 Jun 2014 17:53

Just spit and polished the steed for Sunday and the rear gear cable snapped (At the head/lever I think) as I was testing gears. 1730 on a Friday. Snafu :(

Before I run around the LBSs Saturday (never a good time), can someone advise if any old cable will do, or does it have to be a dedicated Shimano 6800? Does the handle bar tape/outer cable have to be removed in order to re-thread new cable? (I've only done external cabling before).

Thanks

Not specific. Stainless is better than cheap. It's a little fiddly to get the cable up from the hole in the bottom and in to the outer cable but that's what you have to do. Lube the cable outer under the bar tape by spraying GT85 up it. Bit of spray where the cable runs around the top of the lever.
You may have to lift the bar tape up where it goes round the lever in order to see where the cable goes.

It's easy when you know how unless you have Sram shifters when it still isn't easy :D
