New bike.... any thoughts?
Ok, so Beacon hive mind, I’m looking for recommendations....
My Roubaix is a write off, but the lovely insurance people have paid out. So, I’m in the market for a new bike!
The roubaix was the first road bike I ever bought and I got it coz I was clueless and the specialized store were nice to me! Lol. Fortunately I loved that bike.
5 years on and I’m still clueless about road bikes, apart from knowing that spesh tend to be over priced....?
Anyone got any thoughts on getting more bike for my money, or should I just go for a roubaix again? Budget is probably around £2.5k max.

So glad you got the insurance Helen, pity about the Roubaix though. There are so many good bikes about you will be spoiled for choice. Most brands get good reviews in Cycling Weekly. I'd still try some shops though and get a good fit. Red Kite have the Trek range nowadays not sure who has Specialised range. On Your Bike now at Boldmere have Cannondale.
Re: New bike.... any thoughts?
Unfortunately I doubt I’d get that past work! Our C2W is through Evans.Matt Hale wrote: ↑12 Jun 2019 17:11This:

Re: New bike.... any thoughts?
Thanks. I’m thinking possibly similar geometry to the roubaix? I’ve been looking, but there’s so much choice it’s all bamboozling! At this rate I can see me ending up with another roubaix!Dave Cox wrote: ↑12 Jun 2019 17:20So glad you got the insurance Helen, pity about the Roubaix though. A lot of bike for the money and one bike to do it all.

Red Kite stock Specialized, Trek and others. Nic Vipond works there, talk to him.
Evans. Don't know if Matt Clegg still works there at all ask him for advice if he does, or has it been closed down actually?! I got Cannondale from there ages ago on my works cycle to work scheme. They do lots of brands.
There's Ribble, generally good spec for the cash and good reviews. In Mailbox. Their eBike looks epic, no-one would know!
Personally wouldn't buy anything without a test ride though. Just 2 mins round the block gives you feel of if you like or not. Don't think Ribble do test rides.
Giant always review well, Northfield Cycles do them.
Planet X great spec for cash too. Again no test ride option.
I'd go with Cannondale but I haven't ridden anything else really! Although I currently fancy an Orbea as next purchase for some reason, Bache Brothers do.

Re: New bike.... any thoughts?
What do you actually want it for? Road summer / road winter / touring / audax / racing / time-trialing... So many options you might need to narrow it down a bit?
Always use the C2W if you can (why not, decent saving). Cycle Republic in brum have always been good to me, and the Boardmans (Endurance / Air) are great bikes. Mike Taylor at Bridgtown will do you a good deal on a Trek (Madone / Edmonda / Domane).
I would worry more about what it has on it? Di2 / Hydraulic / Guard Mounts / Pannier etc. Those are things that you can't really change afterwards.

Re: New bike.... any thoughts?
Yeah - I really loved my old roubaix, so probably similar relaxed geometry. I can’t see me on an aggressive racing set up!! Lol
Our c2w is only with Evans, so I am slightly limited. I do want hydraulic discs, not bothered about Di2, and also not bothered about mud guards etc. I can see me ending up with another roubaix at this rate! Lol.

Re: New bike.... any thoughts?
Might be worth double-checking that your scheme really is only through Evans. Our scheme was only through Halfords but because I wanted a Brompton I emailed the scheme to ask if I could buy from another bike shop and they sent me a very long spreadsheet listing hundreds of other shops that I could buy from. Bad luck if yours really is restricted to one shop!
Our scheme is also limited to £1000 but the scheme allows you to buy frame-only so you can pay for some of the "replaceable parts" separately. It seems to be down to the individual shop to determine how much of the package is actually "the bike" and how much you can pay for separately.

Re: New bike.... any thoughts?
Hi... I ran cycle to work scheme at my school and there were no restrictions as to who you could buy from as long as bike retailer was a member ? .... having said that, the bike I chose was in sale and heavily discounted and so when I came to buy the shop said they couldn’t afford to absorb the commission as well and added 10% back on to cost of bike. It was still a good deal.
