200k (124 mi) ride to Whichford and Evesham. 8:15 departure. SATURDAY 4th June

Post by CeGi » 29 May 2022 22:09

RIDE NOW RESCHEDULED FOR SATURDAY. Same 8:15 start.

Let's keep putting some more distance under our belts with another 200k ride  for our plan to do a 300km later this year

This ride is a special request from Mariana and had 2 key requirements:
- be a 200k but as flat as possible
- had to have 2 café stops
It's you perfect chance to try a 200k, a once in a lifetime opportunity, a long ride where you can pig out to your heart's content :D . So you all have no excuse not to come ;-)

The ride will go south east where we'll be able to admire the Cotswolds from afar (whilst staying at a safe distance from their nasty hills) and will then head west and then north to come back : https://ridewithgps.com/routes/39529921
200 km / 124 mi.
I expect the average speed to be around 14 mph but could possibly be 13mph if some of us end up in not in a good day.

Stops are planned at Whichford (Stop 1 @ the excellent pottery café) and Evesham (Stop 2 @ Herbies Coffee House, coffee locks advised) and we'll try to keep their duration under control in order to be back not too late. On top of the 2 stops there will also be several roadside pit stops for cereal/chocolate bars/gels/ice creams/EPO/Nandrolone ;-) dictated by our sugar blood levels (so bring your ammunitions).

Meeting at the BH for a 8:15 departure. Return ETA 19:00 approx depending on pace and length of stops.

Coffee locks, charged up bike lights and rain/wind jacket (depending on forecast) are recommended as well as a roadworthy stead and a spare tube.

Cedric G.
Ian Gannon
Naomi Bell ? (not heard back from her yet to know whether she can make it Saturday instead of the originally planned Sunday)

Please note that due to medical reasons I use a handle-bar extender, a bit like TT-bars. I use this to relief the pain of NHS diagnosed trapped nerves in my wrists and elbow. I do NOT use these to ride like a TT racer, to draft behind others or similar performance seeking stunts.
Every bike ride, be it commute, ride alone or in group, entails its share of risks (bad road surface, motorised traffic, natural elements, our or other riders' mistakes or inattentions...). This is common knowledge and we all ride at our own risk. Nevertheless if my use of this extender this makes you feel uncomfortable, please do not join my rides.

With pleasure, but won't be as fast as your London ride.
You're in unless you don't want anymore, then I'll rename it so that it's no longer eponymous

Hi Cedric, can't make this one as need to be back earlier but hoping to join you for the Loop of Brum if you're still planning that for 11th.

Have a good one!

Hi Rich, we could set off earlier but I trust Mariana won't agree ;-)
The loop is still planned (and actually already open for registration as it was meant to run 10 days ago but had to postpone due to my encounter with the tarmac). You can already join if you wish: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=10048
We'll have a good one then too !

RIDE NOW SCHEDULED SATURDAY

OK, it seems that Sunday will not be a nice day to say the least.
As I nearly lost my riding partner to hypothermia last week-end (and some of my fingers to frostbite  ) I prefer not to take the risk to have 10 hours of riding drenched and frozen so I am rescheduling it to Saturday right now for people to be able to make/adjust plan (and hoping the bad weather will not rush forward to Saturday).
I can't believe the weather will change that much in 36 hr as I am typing this on my patio with a nice end of afternoon, but this is England! And for once Weather.com, bbc.com, the met office and the Norwegian met office all seem to agree, so let's not tempt the devil.

Paul,
I'd be delighted to have you with us but I think you're right, we might be a tad faster than you like. I thought that with the rides getting longer our average speed would plummet, but this does not seem to be the case.
Not sure whether a sensible idea but why not come with us to Whichford and then return on your own at a more leisurely pace with a more direct route? something like : https://ridewithgps.com/routes/39665070

Day started a bit chilly with a few drops at times, and then sun came out. Despite the headwind on the way back, and slow/incomplete service at the 2nd café stop, the four of us got a great time on a great ride out:
Naomi Squeaky Bell
Ian Gannon
Ced Onion G (L)
Mick Audax Stanford

Kudos to Naomi and Ian for their 2nd 200k of the year ... and to Mick for his 2nd 200k of the week-end !!!!!
Was meant to be a relatively flat ride for the distance. The only thing flat we got was my front tyre. Else it ended up my third highest elevation ever. Thanks RideWithGPS for being so crap at always underestimating elevation.

Missed riding with you the last few weeks. June has been a bit crazy for me with Birthdays. I have a 40th next weekend and the weekend after is my 50th. Gutted that I won’t be able to do the 300k on the 18th.
