Weekly Club Update and Club runs for the weekend of 17th July

WEEKLY UPDATE:

So where to start this week’s roundup. First of all, huge kudos and thanks to Ade Ravencroft for organising, publicising and running the BCSA Regional Grass Track championships on Saturday. This was a great event and shows our commitment to helping people onto bikes whatever their age or experience…fantastic work, Ade and to all the helpers.

At the other end of the spectrum, what can you say about John Williams… at a bit of a loose end, so he rode the Land’s End to John O Groats Audax, a simple case of 1,442kms in 4.5 days, simply amazing stuff. John met the manager of John O Groats FC at the end who had just resigned after a heavy defeat to Land’s End United, citing that ‘he’d taken the team as far as he can’ :D (…I’ll get me coat)
…. and a huge special mention to Mick Stanford, who started this ride, but unfortunately had to abandon at Exeter with a shoulder injury and instead of just going home and moping, got straight into his van and helped volunteer at the overnight controls in Northern England and Scotland before meeting John at the end and driving him home…is this the best case of the good Samaritan you’ve ever heard, apart from that bloke on the way to Damascus.

Also of special mention is Sam Boswell, who competed in the Ironman UK last Sunday, finishing second in her age group, again, an amazing feat of endurance....and of course the racing Beacon guys are back...Take a read of Kyle Gatier's weekly review in the racing section of the MB, but good to see him sprinting for podium places now and to Huan Dong, Jon Bills and Fiachra for starting their racing experience so creditably...good to see Beacon racing again...why not pin a number on your back and give it a go, just get in touch with Kyle for more info and/or support.

So what happened in the world of club runs? Thanks as usual to the leaders who were Me, Cedric, Rich Chaplin and Paul Balfe…I led to 350kms ride to Aberystwyth and back after the original leader Paul Johnson fell foul of Covid the day before, and great to see Cedric leading another 200kms club run on Sunday, the hotter day of the weekend. We are now getting message board posts advertising rides on many days of the week now, and this is great, but as for our club run rule assumptions, they remain that people can only accumulate points from one club run per week, and weekend and Tuesday night runs as posted on the message board are recognised as ‘formal’ club runs. …but don’t worry about the detail, just ride whenever you want.

Final point on club runs, particularly the Tuesday night rides…please make sure you ride at the suggested speeds and not push the pace above that…if you feel you are, then just move up to the faster advertised ride.

Er, that’s it…this week looks mighty hot so be good to get your sunscreen out and ride…we already have an A-ride to Brewood, B ride to Bishampton and a Mick Stanford BC led ride, so let’s make sure we have others for people to join…you know what to do!

Enjoy

Phil
