Sunday 5 Feb, C run to Bishampton - MAIN RIDE FULL BUT SECOND GROUP MAY FORM

Post by George » 29 Jan 2023 20:51

I'll lead a C run to Bishampton on Sunday 5 February.

Start: BH 09:15 (meet 10 minutes before)
Distance: 78km/49mi
Terrain: gently undulating
Speed: roughly 22kph/14mph (steady-state effort, implying no surges or lulls, so we can keep the group orderly and together)
Route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/41753016
Max group size: 8 people, including me

Advance sign-up below preferred. However, if we don't have eight names by Sunday morning, on-the-line joiners will be welcome, up to the eight-rider limit.

Provisional rider list:
George Barker
Pete Norman
Mariana Sorrill
Andy McGrath
Patrick
Si Walker
Jon Saddler
Ewan Ross
Keith Adcock

Noel O'Dwyer to lead a splinter group, possibly a burst, possibly including some of the above. (Let's play it by ear.)

Count yourself in, Pete. I look forward to catching up.

Thanks for the offer to lead a second group. My main reason for limiting the group size is that there is limited indoor seating at the café. So having a second group would really be desirable only if we also staggered departure times significantly. Let's see how much interest there is in the days ahead, shall we?

Ced, I'm fine with you joining us, but I feel I should give the people who have already signed up a chance to say if they're not.

Pete, Mariana, Andy, Patrick: as most of you already know, Cedric has tri-bars on his bike to help with a medical condition. There are circumstances where the use of tri-bars when riding with a group could be a source of added risk, because a rider who is using them has slightly less directional control and cannot brake quite as quickly as a rider on a normal road bike. However, Cedric only uses his tri-bars briefly, a few times during a ride. When he does so, he drops off the back a little. Therefore, on a gentle ride like this, I think that the added risk is negligible. Are you all okay with that? No one should feel under pressure to agree if they are nervous about the situation.

George,

I am confused! I believed that topic had been finally sorted at the last AGM in December, and that in light of the insurance situation and for inclusivity purposes I was allowed to join others' ride.
I had spoken with Phil and assured that despite that authorisation I would NOT join a ride on which would already have registered:
- the few people who I know are uncomfortable with my handle-bar set-up
- any people I had never ridden with before.
Pete, Mariana, Andy and Patrick have all already joined some of my rides in the past where my caveat was displayed so I considered them OK with my set-up and so I joined that ride.

But obviously, despite what I had understood during the AGM, this still seems to be an issue.
So now the one uncomfortable is me
and as such

Cedric, my understanding was that the AGM decided that there was no obstacle to you participating as long as it was clear to everyone beforehand that you might occasionally use tri-bars, and that everyone was okay with that. I *am* okay with that, but I want to check that the others are too; that's all. I'm sorry if that annoys you.

Naturally I'll check that I have not misunderstood what was decided.

George,

I’ll take a second group, either as a burst or a possible stop off at Feckenham…. Anyone joining me have supplies in case it turns out to be a burst.

Apologies for the slowness in responding to some of these posts... been a bit busy.

I've added everyone who has already expressed an interest, but if we get any more, we'll need an additional group, and it should be either a burst (non-stop) or use a different café, because there's not a lot of indoor seating, and I think it's still a bit nippy for sitting comfortably outside in a sweaty vest.

I look forward to seeing you all! (Weather forecast is very positive for the time of year.)

On a more general note, I'm planning to get into a rhythm of leading a run roughly once a month. They'll be C runs (22kph-ish) through the spring, but once we get into the warmer weather, and I'm back on a lighter bike, I'll revert to leading B runs (25-26kph). (I'm not strong enough to lead at B pace on my winter bike.)
