Weekly Club Update and Club runs for the weekend of 22nd and 23rd of April

WEEKLY UPDATE:

THERE NO CLUB RUNS THIS SUNDAY AS IT IS THE WEEKEND OF THE LMTT, BEACON'S FLAGSHIP TIME TRIAL EVENT. The only exception to this is the weekly BC Guided Ride, this week led by Richard Chaplin.

The LMTT takes place on Sunday 23rd April starting and finishing in Great Witley. Now, as someone said to me this week, we have well over 200 members, yet only 9 people have volunteered to help marshal, and virtually all of those nine are serial volunteers who have done it before. Why is this, this person asked? ...and to be honest, I'm at a loss... it would be great if you could step up and help out by marshalling at a corner next Sunday morning...we need to double up at some of the junctions, and there will be an experienced person there to help you....you will also get a bag of crisps and some juice to power you through the couple of hours that are required, you can't say fairer than that. It is often said that only 10% of a group will ever volunteer for anything, so let's get near that figure...please post either on the message board or on Facebook if you fancy earning the respect of your fellow human...come on guys, don't rely on the regulars to do everything!! It doesn't take much effort and it's great to watch this event from close up.

As for the weekend just gone, thanks to the leaders as always, namely, Paul Balfe, Phil Gameson and Cedric, although there were a trio of late rides posted that didn't get seen in time... also it was fab to see James and Matt Russell doing a sportive in Shropshire, with 10-year old Matt upping his distance PB to 50miles in full Beacon kit...great stuff! Also kudos goes to Ed Moss, who is still blasting round 25 mile time trials in well under an hour (mid 58, in fact)...superb work, Ed...

...and it's wonderful to see the Beacon Audax crew keeping it large with Karl Walton and Mick Stanford riding a 300kms audax over to the East Coast on Saturday, and particular kudos also to Naomi Bell, who is now doing solo 200kms DIY audaxes in the wilderness of Scotland, which is right up our street in raising the bar. I know I rabbit on about our long distance riding credentials, but out of the 269 cycling clubs in the UK who have had a rider riding at least one 200kms audax since November, Beacon RCC lie in 8th place nationally with only specialist Audax clubs above us... This is something we're proud of and we are going to write a quarterly audax update, with personal stories and pointers about how to start, get involved or take away the fear of riding these distances... the first of these will be posted later this week.

Anyway, looping back round to the LMTT this Sunday, you know what to do, and for once, it isn't completely ignore me (here's hoping!)

Enjoy

Phil
