Weekly Club Update and Club runs for the weekend of 23rd and 24th of September

WEEKLY UPDATE:

It's the last time trial of the season this coming season, and it's everybody's favourite, the Club Hill Climb Championships! This is up Winwood Heath Road starting at 10am, and as it such a club institution, any club runs (apart from the BC Guided Ride) are to start from the top of the hill after the last rider has finished. I will lead a quickish A-Ride from the top at approx 10:30 round to Broad Acres (see separate post). Please go along to race, marshal or watch, it's great fun!

The following week sees the last Beacon Audax of the year, namely, the 'Beyond the Dyke' Audax leaving Belbroughton at 8am...take a look at the details elsewhere on the Message Board, and why not give that a go...anyone riding both gets double kudos.

There were a reduced number of club runs this past weekend for some reason. Phil Gameson went to bed on Saturday night thinking it was going to be just him and one other, only to wake up and see that everybody had piled on such that there a dozen riders at the cafe...Interesting to guess the reason for this influx, laziness? an improving weather picture? someone wonderful signed up so everyone else wanted to - you can draw your own conclusions, but always good to see old and new faces on a club run...there are still too many people riding solo on Sundays...why not reacquaint yourselves with a good old-fashioned club run, as comforting as your mum's yorkshire pudding, or your dad's barbecued sausage or some other gender cliché that went out with the ark (d'triomphe).

Anyway, lead a ride, or join up on one and remind yourself how refreshing it is to talk nonsense whilst on a bike or munching on your favourite breakfast.

Not many Tuesday or Thursday rides left before they depart for the autumn into their caves, but there are rumours that some dark midweek rides will still happen for the cycling moths to get excited by...oooh, bright lights!

As for notable rides this week, look no further than Ed Moss who is still ripping up these time trials around the country, setting PB's and regularly in the top 3-4 in some pretty top class events including a 20:05 10miler on Saturday and a creditable 8th in the VTTA National 10mile on Sunday in 21:57. ...just a fabulous season for Ed who deserves top praise. Also the weekly mention and arm raise for young Matt Russell, who finished 4th at this week's CX event at Ullenhall, finishing strongly and just missing out on the podium.

Finally, you may have read Philip Whiteman's post about a cyclist becoming unconscious in Drayton at the weekend and having to be airlifted to hospital. It was reported that he had no ID on him, and all members are encouraged to carry their own ID...Beacon has periodically supplied blank ICE (In Case of Emergency) cards for people to carry, but it seems to us that something so fundamental that we each have a responsibility to carry something ourselves, either a card, bike attachment, helmet attachment or at least phone emergency details...Plenty of people have provided weblinks to what they themselves carry, and I urge people to post on this Facebook message a copy of the weblinks shown elsewhere and for all riders to protect themselves by carry their own ICE information.

Stay safe and enjoy the wind and rain this week.

Phil
