Weekly Club Update and Club runs for the weekend of 30th September and 1st October

WEEKLY UPDATE:

21 people at the Beacon hill climb on Sunday, with dozens watching, perhaps a small handful wishing they were competing, the rest just thinking of a sausage and egg sandwich at Broad Acres. Congratulations to the day's fastest finisher Cameron Biddle for another super-fast ride and finishing in 3:03, and to Jon Kerin for becoming the Beacon Hill Climb Champion 2023, with commiserations to Phil Gameson, Simon Dighton and Celia Brown, who all must have been singing Youssou N'Dour and Neneh Cherry songs as they all finished with 7 seconds of Jon. Special mention must be made to Phil G who competed on Sunday some 34 years after he last rode it and nearly won... going to show that class is permanent.

Thanks to Si Woodward, Dave Cole and all the other helpers for putting it on, and that completes the Beacon TT season for this year, although hill climb TT's are still going on all over the region and country for the next few weeks.

Good to see over 20 people rode from there over to Broad Acres for a monster sandwich and chat, reflecting on the sacrifices you need to make to become a chiselled athlete.

...and so onto this week, it's the last Beacon Audax of the season this coming Saturday, Lord Whiteman's 'Beyond the Dyke' 210kms jaunt out to mid-Wales. Be good to see a whole host of Beacon riders on this and huge thanks to Phil for organising the audaxes over the last few years. He is stepping down after this year from organising them, mostly to ride more rather than organise, but never say never about returning one day. Next year, me, Mick Stanford and John Williams will take over the organisation of this one, leaning heavily on Phil's contacts and expertise to avoid it becoming a pig's dinner!

Cyclocross. Young Matt Russell continues to ride these every week, but unfortunately was outside the top ten this week due to a couple of hefty falls, but Jason Halstead and Alberto Recchioni also rode in the older age groups.. The WMCCL season is now in full swing, and don't forget that Beacon are organising our own event (in conjunction with Redditch) at the end of November, so we'll be asking for help for this event nearer the time.

Finally, there is a Beacon trip to the Mallorca 312 next April - the event Saturday April 27th so people are going out a few days before and coming back a few days later...let me know if you want to know more as we already have a dozen or so people who are going. Registration for the Mallorca 312 is Tuesday 3rd October (next week!!) and sells out on the first day, so if you're a ditherer you won't be there.

That's it for this week, Autumn is officially here, but your fitness is at it's best all season so make the most of it, ride regularly and enjoy the camaraderie of club runs, there's nothing like them if you want to discuss the raging issues of the day.

Keep happy

Phil
