Beacon's Brecons 300 - CLUB RUN 28th May

Post by Philip Whiteman » 30 Jan 2017 15:41

BEACON’S BRECONS 300 CLUB RUN: Sunday 28th May

A repeat of last year's extraordinary club run that attracted 27 members across two groups. So here it is back by popular demand.

The route will be a little over 300km in length following an undulating but not unnecessarily hilly route along quiet B and A roads with some lanes. The route heads out through Tenbury, Leominster / Hay on Wye for a cafe stop - Tal-y-bont - Abergavenny - Monmouth for a cafe stop - Newent - Upton for a shop stop - Crowle and home. Overall, it is not too testing in terms of hills. The only challenging sections come after Tenbury and just before Monmouth.

https://ridewithgps.com/routes/13209182

If you are willing to lead the second group, please let me know. GPX files will be provided.

As with last year, the ride is exclusive to fully paid up members of the Beacon. Last year, we had a number of non-members seeking to participate but it would have made the ride unwieldy.

Please let me know if you are interested in order that we can gauge the number of groups and leaders required

I'd like to do the same as last year: start and finish at home and ride 200km-ish with the group.

Great ride last year and the memory has almost faded enough to convince myself I should do it again.

Incidentally, Paul Johnson is planning an extra long club run of 200km around the end of April as prep for the Beacon's Brecons.

The clock is ticking towards the end of May.

If you have not yet signed-up, then it is not too late. But do not leave your mile-eating training too late.

Dear All

Beacon’s Brecons 300km Club Run

In a month’s time, we will be holding a repeat of the Beacon’s Brecons 300km club run on 28th May. Thank you for expressing an interest in joining this club. So down to business, the purpose of this e-mail is to ask whether you are still interested in order that we can gauge numbers and to provide details on the actual ride.

The route:

Is almost the same as last year’s minus some improvements between Talgarth and Tal-y-bont, and; White Ladies and Droitwich. Details can be found here: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/13209182

The Cafes

If everyone turns out for the run, more than one group will be necessary and each will probably need to use cafes on route. Here are some suggested stops for each group to choose:
1. Leominster or Hay-on-Wye cafes

2. Tal-y-bont for the shop

3. Monmouth for cafes

4. Upton for the Coop shop stop

Departure Time

Same as last year. 0600 from the Black Horse, Northfield. The anticipated ride time is between 12-14 hours depending upon riders and weather conditions. Faster if warmer.

Absence

Despite organising the event, I will not be riding. On the day of the Beacon’s Brecon, I stupidly double booked myself for some online tuition work with students to cover the absence of a colleague. Phil Richards will be there on the day to help sort out any issues. As most of us are experienced club run riders, ‘leaders’ will not really be necessary. Just sort your groups out in the morning. Whilst not there physically; I will be with you in spirit.

Potential riders so far:

....sorry paid up-Beacon RCC members only

Andy Wrightson
Phil Richards
Neil Orchard
Robert Wade
Paul Johnson
Adam Green
Nick Shenton
James Tate
Carolyn Clegg
Alistair Hey
Johnny Mursa
Barry Fight
Ryän Evanson
Barry Evans
Charles White
Christopher Ashford
Mark Connell
Neil Lynch
Craig Walmsley
Gary King
Ben Walmsley
Vince Tennant
George Lazenby
Cedric Goan
Phil Field
Leonie Balter
Lee Dowling
Simon Woodward
Joe Warwood
Alex Hill

Any queries, please let me know.

Regards

Philip Whiteman

Looks like rain.

............not really. Sunny weather with a light westerly wind. Temperatures will be slightly warmer than last year so hydration whilst riding is essential. There are no carriageway closures indicated on roadworks.org

The route has been amended slightly to reflect some road alterations in Gilwern. The edited version can be found here: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/17716037

Have a good day all.

Really looking forward to this, although as my first Beacon club run I haven't exactly chosen an easy one to join in on!

I've already mentioned this to Phil, but as I live in Cleobury Mortimer, I'll meet the group in Great Witley as you all come through. I'll be there early to make sure I don't miss you all!

A couple of points about this Sunday's 300kms ride, where the weather looks as if it will behave and be nice for us. First, it's highly likely we will split into two groups, so not all of you will be able to ride with Paul Johnson, aka Mr Popular, brace yourselves for that disappointment if you don't.

Secondly, to help you decide your eating and drinking strategy, we propose the following 4 stops:
1. Leominster at 70kms (section = 44 miles)
2. Talybont at 136kms (section = 41 miles)
3. Monmouth at 185kms (section = 31 miles - hilly section)
4. Upton at 245kms (section = 37 miles)
5. Finish at 304kms (section = 37 miles)

Total = 304kms or 190miles

Late night laps of your local chip shop to make it 200miles is optional!

Please plan your bidons and back pocket food appropriately for the above plan.

Due to some rather pi55 poor planning on my part, but I have also entered a Mark Rigby 215km audax the day before as I thought this ride was next weekend.... So the burning question is, do you think that MrsW would tolerate me doing both?

Most people would be wondering if their legs would tolerate a 500 km weekend, but not Alan...

Having ridden both the routes, I would say that they are on a par in terms of effort. Asides from Leysters and the Rockfield Road out of Abergavenny, the 300 is a moderate route with the main route presenting itself in the form of distance rather than ascent. Phil Richards and I rode the 200 last January and found that demanding for the opposite reason (what do you say Phil?). Personally speaking, I would not wish to ride both on consecutive days and given that it would be an early start on Sunday, will you have recovered sufficiently from Saturday?

If it helps your choice, the route for Sam Weller's April Foolery is the same as Castles, Kings and Priests which is scheduled for December, meaning that you will have another chance later this year http://www.aukweb.net/events/detail/17-395/

Yes, come along Martin, you'll be very welcome. We're aware of a few people on the list not being able to make it, so Any last-minute 'yes's' are free to come along

Weather doesn't look so hot now compared to the forecast earlier in the week, but should be ok for most of the day.

A huge thank to all the beacys that took part in this incredible ride!
It was the first time that I ride such distance.
I probably need an ass transplant but it deserved
!

Next time I will try to dress my self less than today (of course with Beacon jersey).

Last but not least I wish you a fantastic DING DING bell Monday and a lot of MAMMA MIA!

Big hugs beacys!

Great stuff, Simon - glad you made it back ok...you didn't miss anything at Monmouth, except an 80min cafe stop and a 60min wait for a ham sandwich, only to be told that they'd run out of ham.

Alberto, you're a star...it was a joy to hear the intelligent use of your bell, but can I please implore you never to lend it to Paul Johnson - he'd use it like a demonic shepherd frog-marching his herd.

A fab day out with the Beacons today - thanks to all!

Thanks for a great day out guys, it really was an awesome day and first Club Run for me!

I managed to get absolutely soaked through with 20 miles to go so I couldn't be bothered with getting to 300km, but I think we were blessed with the weather so not complaining!

Looking forward to a few more club runs!

Cheers :)
