Eroica run (+C run?) 27/8/17

Post by George » 16 Aug 2017 14:26

A few of us are planning to ride the Eroica in Italy at the start of October. (If you don't know what that is, and would like to, see: http://www.eroicagaiole.com/#home.) A few other club members own or take an interest in vintage bikes. As a road test for the Italy-bound and as a bit of fun for others, on Sunday 27 August I'll lead a club run for vintage bikes and people who just like looking at vintage bikes.

The run will start and finish at the Black Horse in the usual way, at the usual time. However, you don't necessarily need to do the full ride to join in the fun. See below for details.

There will be no Eroica-style participation criteria. Come on any bike you fancy riding. You are welcome even if you're on a brand new bike and you're just curious to see the old bikes in action. However, the more people there are on vintage bikes, the better.

THE DESTINATION HAS BEEN CHANGED TO SPETCHLEY - SEE DISCUSSION BELOW

Some of the club members who have old bikes are themselves of a certain vintage. With them in mind, we'll pause briefly at Wychold Church at approx 10:15 (after 23km; 23km left to the café) and again at the end of School Road, Hanbury, at approx 10:35 (after 30km; 13km left to the café), so that anyone wanting to rendezvous at those points may join us for a short ride. We'll ride at the pace of the slowest participant. I'm guessing that that is likely to be about C run pace, i.e. 21-23kph (13-14mph).

With that in mind, and noting that there is currently something of a shortage of C run leaders, I'm happy to make this a combined Eroica + C run, unless someone steps forward to lead a separate C run.

Great idea George, all being well I'll come along on either a 2000 Mercian or my Eroica Britannia 1980s Carlton

PS: I have no intention of unnecessarily exposing my Eroica bike to seriously inclement weather. If the forecast is really miserable, I'll still lead, but on a non-vintage bike.

Might be worth confirming the cafe is open George, I noticed a post a few weeks ago stating it was closed but it was unclear whether it meant on a particular date or permanently.

Thanks for the advice. It was already in my mind to try and check, but I definitely will do after reading your comments.

It's barely any further to Flyford Flavel, of course, but I thought that there might be too many of us, especially if it's a C run as well. Another option is Spetchley, but I thought that they would probably be very busy at Bank Holiday weekend.

I went past the village hall at Grafton Flyford on Sunday, and there were no signs of life. I've since discovered a post on our own Fb page (went up while I was out of circulation, I think), saying that the café was closing for a while. Auntie Rita's will probably be packed, so I called Spetchley and established that they do have room for us. This will mean tinkering with the route. I'll do that later today. The pick-up point at the end of Flying Horse Lane will probably also need moving. I'll edit the first post shortly.

IMPORTANT! (For anyone planning to join us en route or at the café)

After discovering that the café at Grafton Flyford is no longer open, I've changed the destination of this ride. It'll now go to Spetchley Park. First pick-up point remains unchanged (Wychbold church 10:15), but second pick-up will be the end of School Road, Hanbury at about 10:35. If anyone *is* planning to meet us at either point, it would be handy to know in advance.
