Club runs - 27th August

Post by WorcsPhil » 21 Aug 2017 09:31

Well, that was a real mish-mash on Sunday... we had leaders retiring with mechanicals, additional leaders on the B, split groups, leaders stepping up on the day, broken chains, and probably lots of bacon. A good effort, and hopefully the 34 people out on club runs all enjoyed it (in their own way)

The club run trophy is still up for grabs, and with 3 points still separating Paul Johnson and Andy Wrightson with 3 club run weekends left, it may go to the wire! Don't know about you, but the tension of this is keeping me awake at night...

It's the Bank Holiday weekend this coming Sunday, and we already have two out-of-the-ordinary club runs set up for your delectation. Chris Ashford is leading the final 200kms club run of the year (presumably) and George Barker is leading a C-ride that will also include an Eroica ride (older bikes), i.e. wipe down your vintage bikes, don your hair shirt and turn up with a fine moustache (female equivalents are available at all good stores) to celebrate the cycling of yesteryear.

What will the B-ride leader suggest next? Tricyles?

Anyway, this weeks rides are:

A: 200kms club run to Towcester - Chris Ashford (Meet at 07:45, leave at 08:00)
B: Cobhouse Fisheries - Paul Johnson
C: Spetchley (Worcester) - George Barker - doubling up as the Beacon vintage bike rally (Eroica warm up ride)

Sunday 27th Bank Holiday A Run - 200km's Saracen's Number 2 - Permanent Audax 08:00 start

Sunday 27th Bank Holiday A Run - 200km's Saracen's Number 2 - Permanent Audax 08:00 start from Black Horse

As Phil Richards said, this might be the last long ride for the year so I am going to lead the "Saracen's Number 2" permanent audax route.

200km permanent cycling event starting from Bournville. BOURNVILLE - MORTON IN MARSH - TOWCESTER - WARWICK. Enjoy a ride through the Cotswolds before heading north to Towcester and Warwick before returning to Bournville (2,000m climb / descent).

It will be a 08:00 start from Black Horse, then out via Bournville with a target of the Jack Hills Cafe (one of Paul Johnson's suggestions) just 1km on from Towcester. They are open until 14:00 and have a VW meet on the Sunday so a chance to look around some classic cars if we are there on time, and if we are late then Bell's Plantation is open across the road until 16:30.

Stops on route:
CHP 1 - 65k - Moreton in the Marsh - Fosseway Garden Centre - https://www.fossewaygardencentre.co.uk/ ... estaurant/ GL56 0DS
CHP 2 - 128k - Towcester - Jack Hills Cafe - https://jackshillcafe.co.uk/ NN128ET
CHP 2 - 128k - Towcester (Backup) - Bell Plantation Cafe https://www.bellplantation.co.uk/cafe/ NN12 6GX
CHP 3 - 170k - Warwick - Warwick North Services https://www.welcomebreak.co.uk/location ... north-m40/ CV35 0AA
CHP 4 - 217k - Bournville - Finish

I'm happy to lead, but certainly won't be sitting on the front all day - more shouting instructions "left / right and off the back!" Please upload routes to Garmin's if you have them.

If anyone want's to get their audax points for the month its £3.00 for entry / £4.50 for Paypal entries to audaxUK - see the link above.

Yep Barry - 08:00 depart from the Black Horse.

We will go direct to Bournville for the first checkpoint via Great Stone road and then join the route at the Kings Norton double roundabout's by the Fire Station. There should be a few cash machines around for a quick print out of receipts (or what ever is required for Audax collation).

Chris,
I am not interested in Audax points and suspect many others are the same? If so, can we do it the other way round? I.e., those who want to get their Brevet card / receipts at Bournville, do it first and then we just meet up at the BH for -say- 0815 depart as per a normal (early start) club run. We can ride across and pick up the route at Forhill pretty easily.

Great weather tempted a few souls out for a long ride to Towcester using a new route (Saracen's permanent audax number 2).

The route was good, but did have some fairly long sections on major roads - good for both summer and winter. It was definitely fast (although that probably had a lot to do with Barry "Express" Evans monster pullings on the front). It started with a few kickers in the first 70k, but flattened out in the middle section and the inevitable hills back into Brum.

A great new cafe stop was found in Timothys Restaurant at Fosseway Garden Centre, Moreton in the Marsh. Good prices, huge coffee (and cakes) and loads of room. We were all a little unsure when Andy went a bit "off piste" with the continental breakfast, but where actually pretty jealous when he returned with an excellent looking spread of cold meats, cheeses, and about 5 different pastries! Definitely one to re-visit for slightly longer club runs (it was about ~70km to get there).

A-run riders:
Chris Ashford (leading... from the middle / back)
Phil Richards
Barry Evans
Ryan Evanson
Robert Wade
Connor McGregor
Andy Wrightson
