I like the ideas put forward and especially the one having a run (D ) just above the intro ride, as I had a baptism of fire doing 60 mile to Cobhouse the week after an intro ride, don't get me wrong I enjoyed it,but may have been a bit too much for a newbie and the weather didn't help I know that can't be helped.
Its not put me off though, couldn't do 19th Nov due to work commitments hopefully will see you on 26th

All interesting ideas, Phil. I'd certainly be interested in participating in one or two of those (time and form permitting). I'll do the 500 (from home) if it falls on a convenient weekend and if I'm in shape.

Weston has iconic status in the club's history, which appeals to me. However, there's no getting away from the fact that the traditional route (basically straight down the A38) is really crap for cycling these days. The modified version that we did four years ago was certainly an improvement, but still wasn't a route that I would choose to ride in any other context. My preference would be to start the ride somewhere outside B'ham, which would allow us to use a much more rural route. I'm tempted to volunteer to work out a plan, but I'm currently so far off the pace that I really can't be sure that I'll be capable of doing the ride (never mind doing it at a pace acceptable to others).

By the way, can I anticipate your publication of the 2018 intro ride list and volunteer to lead in February?

How about combining a night ride and Weston and back in one hit?

And no, not in February either! The longest day of the year, relaxed ride to Weston at midnight via the A38 and stopping at either of the two 24 hour McDonalds and or Gordano Services, arriving at Weston for around 9am.

Breakfast on the sea front and then return home via the scenic (if rather lumpy) Forest of Dean route?

Alan,
Why not in February. The A38 will be much quieter than in mid-summer and it's what we did 50/60 years ago.

Yes I know, and respectfully I tip my hat and bow gracefully to those that did it back then with 100% of my admiration. And yes, part of me would really like to do it, if only so that I can say I have done it and joined the elite ranks of those people that have done it before me.

But another part of me says buggar that.......

I have done it there and back in a day solo, which okay was in the summer, but does that count as being stupid enough?

I'm looking to run a 'Beacon French Adventure' whereby people would drive down to Dover, we get the 1st ferry over as foot/bike passengers, ride around the Pas De Calais area during the day (100mile route) and catch a ferry back. This is very much based upon the model Wiggle uses for their French trips. It would be up to people to organise car shares and potential room shares down in dover, but that should be easy enough to organise.

How about a club run to Worcester Country Park during 2018? Out and back via the A38

I thought that I would lower the game.

Family/teenager rides would be good. For 9-16 year olds plus a parent or two. Maybe a canal tour or something.

An intro or family ride ending at this https://www.letsride.co.uk/events/birmingham
on 10th June would be good maybe? The south end of route is at Edgbaston cricket ground so utilising rea valley route is an option. 6k people did it last year and I know several of our young members loved it.

Also a fortnight later on 24th June there's a Big Healthy Lunch event in Cofton Park 11-3 as part of the Move More Eat Well project and local community sports clubs can have a gazebo and run activities, Go Ride Cyclocross would be perfect. I'm working on both days so can't do anything. There will be 6k people at Let's Ride event and 300-500 at Big Healthy Lunch with led rides to it along NCN5 so a good chance to promote the club. On the Big Healthy Lunch more info will be posted at www.movemoreeatwell.com and www.greenerbirmingham.com
