Club runs - 12th August

So we had 23 riders out on club runs this Sunday, on what was possibly the hottest club run day of the year. A storming 200kms+ A-ride saw 7 riders start in Barnt Green to meet up with the Tramping the Two Loops Audax, where Alan, Si and Sarah also rode and therefore also nab club points...

Great to see the C-ride do the '100 in as long as it takes' and bluntly it didn't take very long at all, great riding, chaps.

...and thanks to Phil G (we have our very own 'G') for leading the B-ride also. A steamy day, wasn't it!

and I don't know about you, but I'm addicted to dot-watching at the moment, and have Adam Green, Stu White and the current leader James Hayden on repeat...for those few of you who don't know what I'm talking about, this is the Transcontinental race from Belgium to Greece, where the route takes them north for 1000kms away from Greece, simply because it can...the organisers have also placed the controls on top of mountains, which is amusing of them, eh? ...if you haven't caught up with Stu's daily facebook videos, you really should, they're comedy gold!

Anyway, club runs go on, and this week we have a retro+ C-ride with George Barker. To be honest, I'm not sure what this is, but no doubt George will set out below what is in in his own inimitable way. Please can we have A and B ride leaders this week please, it looks cooler so throw away your gorilla suits and re-join Beacon.

This week's rides are:

A: Destination TBC - Nick Shenton
B: Volunteer required
C: Retro+ Ride to Charlecote - George Barker

Last year's Retro-plus-C ride seemed to go okay, so I'm repeating the exercise this Sunday, 12 August. For anyone who doesn't remember or is new: I'm rolling out my restored vintage (late-70s) bike to lead a slow run. Everyone else who has an old(-style) bike, likes looking at old bikes or just wants to do a slow club run is invited. People who have/like old bikes but don't feel up to riding the whole distance are invited to join us at the café and maybe just tag along for a few miles.

We'll go to Charlecote Garden Centre this time. It's 88km (55 miles) of rolling terrain, which I'm aiming to cover at about 22kph (13 to 14mph). So that's about four hours' riding, with a return to the Black Horse at two-ish (all being well).

- Route on Strava
- Route on BikeHike

Weather forecast is currently for a dry day, but cooler than we've become used to. If by any chance the forecast deteriorates seriously between now and the weekend, I'll still lead a C-pace run to Charlecote, but I won't use my vintage bike.

Really sorry about this, everyone, but I have to pull out of leading on Sunday.

I learnt last night that, a few days ago, a close friend of mine in Holland was murdered outside the offices of the translation agency he ran in Alphen a/d Rijn. It sounds like the stuff of throwaway paperback fiction, but unfortunately it isn't. His funeral is on Monday (they don't hang about with such things over there), so on Sunday I will be driving over.

I hope you all have a good ride. The café at Charlecote is expecting a dozen or so. If a new leader steps forward and prefers a different destination, please give Charlecote a call to say that we're not coming: 01789 841842.

I may lead a retro ride in the autumn instead, but it depends on other commitments and the weather.

Sunday’s weather is currently looking like we’ll be needing a rubber dingy instead of a bike.

But.....I’m daft enough to still ride anyway, so the plan is a non stop Beacon Burst 50-60 miles.

If the weather miraculously changes there will be a revised plan.

I'll lead a B run to ellenden farm shop tomorrow, will be at B pace as still suffering with fractured ribs it's about 60 miles and could be a wet day so don't forget your rain capes
