Club Runs - 6th January

So that's it...2018 has been and gone and 2019 has rushed up on us unannounced. and as it's lovely and mild out, what better way to start the new year than a good club run, the heartbeat of any cycling club's winter activities. As for last Sunday, a splendid A-ride led by the indomitable Paul Johnson wended it's way south to Cobhouse, and a small B run climbed every hill in Worcestershire to get to Clows Top. I'm sure there were half a dozen other people at the Black Horse who probably organised an impromptu C-ride, can someone please post some names of those who rode out.

This week, we have an A-ride leader as usual but still need a B and C-ride leader please. It's obvious that when we have a C-ride leader named in advance we get 10 people or so turning up to ride, but less than half that when there's no listed leader. The answer is obvious...step up!!

...and 2019 represents year of experimentation and growth in club runs and other activities, we already have a Gravel club run in the offing and this week sees an inaugural Women's club ride on Saturday morning at 08:15...all females welcome (an F-ride?), why not come along, bring a friend who may have been umming and ahhing about cycling and have a go...you'll be home in good time to enjoy the rest of your day...This will be led by Carolyn who will post details below.

We will try to have a ride type determined by every letter of the alphabet eventually...an E-ride for electric bikes, an N-ride for night time, an S-ride for Skegness etc... ideas welcome

So this week's rides are:

A: Evesham - Chris Ashford
B: Croome Park - Rob Wade
C: Stourport - Pete Norman

Women's ride on Saturday at 08:15 - led by Carolyn Clegg

I can lead the B run, ice permitting, probably to Croome Park as I think that's a fairly flat route. Will most likely be at the slower end of the pace guideline.

Well, I don't know if it was:
a) the offer of bread pudding at Raphael's
b) the great weather
c) new year's resolutions
d) the opportunity to buy the birthday boy / old man a coffee

but there was a great turn out for the A ride to Evesham today with familiar faces not seen in a while.

Participants were:
Chris Ashford (Leading)
Jessica Rhodes-Jones
Xavier Disley
Dave Hughes
John Hitchcock
Andy Wrightson
Neil Lynch
Paul Johnson
Nick Shenton
Phil Whiteman
Phil Richards
Simon White
Vince Tennant
Jamie Brooks

The ride didn't start well, with Andy Wrightson puncturing before we even got to Waseley, but more seriously Dave Hughes came off his bike on a patch of oil on the return from Evesham. He fell pretty hard, was ok to carry on, but then decided not too and called for support. Many thanks to "Team Phil" (Richards and Whiteman) for escorting him to Blackwell. Rest up well Dave, and we look forward to seeing you back on the road soon.

A decent turn out for the B Run as well. All were well behaved and the ride was incident free until on the return I decided to get my 1st fall of the year out of the way early. No serious injuries and more importantly the bike was ok (apart from damaged bar tape).

Rob Wade (leading)
Richard Leaper
Si Walker
Simon Turner
Finbarr Costigan (welcome to Finbarr on his 1st ride with the Beacon)
Neil Orchard
Claire Fudge
Andy Terry
Alistair Hey
Brett Henshaw
George Barker (at café and partial return)
Seb Perkins
Alex Rybinski

Hi folks I got back home just fine though hitting the deck at my age aint too smart. Front tyre was deliberately slightly under inflated to help with slippy conditions (75psi) but is old, slick and, as was the custom, 23 mm. It is now in the bin! Thanks to outriders Phil and Phil who came back to escort even though I insisted that I was fine. Not the way to start the New Year but the ride itself was excellent.
