Club Runs - 17th February

Well, that was another windy one. Thanks to Helen for leading the women's ride on Saturday in even heavier winds, and Neil and George for leading the A and B/C into the wet and wild Warwickshire lanes. Wonderful to see Dave Hughes and Jess Rhodes-Jones picking up trophies at the British Cycling Awards Ceremony over the weekend, and to Dave in particular for being the new UK record holder in the 200m sprint in his age category. Great stuff! Don't be behind him on the last sprint before the café.....

The weather is looking more calm and mild this coming week, so it would be great to follow the example of Dr Whiteman and lead a ride this weekend. Especially for the C-ride where, despite my nagging, there seems to be a reluctance to lead...I'll keep trying before I let Paul 'Rottweiler' Johnson come to your houses on a Thursday, in the dead of night, and 'persuade' you to lead...in the nice, gentle persuasive way of his. Be warned!

Anyway, this week's rides are:

A: Cropthorne - Philip Whiteman
B: Harvington Farm Shop - Si Walker
C: Ombersley - Pete Norman
Women's ride on Saturday 16th Feb at 08:15...details below and on facebook.

I would suggest behind him is exactly the right place to be. You'll be second to the cafe and Dave will have had time to get you a coffee and cake. :D

I am proud to announce that the Club Run of Excellence (formally known as the A run) will be heading for Clives of Cropthorne this coming Sunday. A fine fayre of organic free range celery sandwiches using artisan wholemeal breads will be available for the delectation of the finest club run riders in the Beacon. Both B and C run riders could aspire to reach similar high standards both offering themselves to lead their respective runs this coming Sunday, so just put yourselves forward.

The Club Run of Excellence route will follow exquisite and tranquil lanes through the picturesque countryside that forms the ancient county of Worcestershire.

For this week's light hearted club run chat, Alan Weaver will introduce a discussion on the great Norwegian playwright and poet, best known for his middle class tragedies such as The Wild Duck, Hedda Gabler, A Doll's House and An Enemy of the People. These are set in a world where the middle class is dominant and explore the qualities of that life, its weaknesses and boundaries and the ways in which it takes away freedoms. It is the women who fare the worst in this society, something Ibsen explored in A Doll's House among others, a play that created a sensation with audiences shocked to watch a woman break free of her bourgeois family life to find her destiny. He explored dark secrets such as incest and, in Ghosts, hereditary syphilis, which attracted the censors. He gave actresses parts they had rarely had before, and audiences plays that, after Shakespeare, became the most performed in the world.

Saturdays Beaconette C ride:

Carolyn Clegg (leading)
Gemma Johnson
Catherine Corr
Sandy Henshaw
Lisa Spurgeon

We set off as usual for our 22 mile Earlswood loop, nice and leisurely. The ladies that have improved over the last few weeks were tasked to do a few sprints then return to myself and Lisa. Great company, blue sky's and sunshine made for cracking ride out :)

Club Run of Excellence

Unfortunately, our speaker on Norwegian poetry was purloined by the B run, so today's cafe discussion was reduced to talking about Byzantine pottery and it's influence on 2nd century middle-eastern diet.

The ride was uneventful albeit ridden at a refreshing pace.

Philip Whiteman (L)
Simon White
HRH Duke of Edinburgh (safety support car)*
Phil Richards
Dave 'right hand turn' Hughes
John Hitchcock
Paul Johnson
Andy Wrightson
Nick Shenton
Kevin Young
Ben Halesowen-Crone

*according to the attendance sheet.

I assumed that was a translation problem from the original Norwegian?
