Spring has sprung...and as the classics season turn into the grand tours, summer bikes come out, Stuart's order for mankini's in the tricolore of Beacon RCC arrive and we all look splendid as we ride off to the wondrous cafes of Worcestershire and Warwickshire, and occasionally Staffordshire, white skin itching to be tanned for the Summer. As ever, I long for the diary below to fill up with leaders all vying to put themselves forward and give back to the club that gives so much. You'll see reference to a couple of ridiculous rides below, but please feel free to post alternatives and rides to wherever you want (within reason)

If you are able to lead a club run or two, please post the date and café destination below.

Note: This purpose of this topic is compile the schedule of club runs. Discussion about individual rides, including rider lists, will be done in a separate thread - one for each Sunday that I will post every week.

On 19th May I'll lead a C pace run to the 98th Annual Meriden Memorial Service. It will be an early start at 8.15 so we can stop at Lavender Hall for refreshments. The Service starts at 11.00 and there is tea and cake afterwards. There is an option to return directly from Lavender Hall for a shorter run.

I'll lead a B run on 19 May. If the weather in the run-up looks encouraging, and if there's appetite, I might make it a two-stop hundred-in-eight. Otherwise a conventional distance to a well-used destination, e.g. Spetchley. Details to follow early May.

I’m proposing an alternative club ride on 12th May from Stoke to Llangollen and back.

This is ideal for those of you wanting to avoid the hoarding masses of cyclists on the Velo Birmingham event.

Starting from Trentham Gardens in Stoke-On-Trent- More details to follow on the Beacon Facebook page and Messageboard.

Sunday 9th June is the Birmingham British Cycling closed road Let's Ride event. Perfect opportunity to do a super intro/family ride straight down the A38 and use the new segregated bike lane (which is to be finished in May, only delivered 5months late by Amey!) and enjoy the closed roads in the city centre around the bull ring, Aston uni, moor street etc.
There are youth races 3-5pm afterwards too.
Can register for it here https://www.letsride.co.uk/events/birmingham

I can lead the A run on the 21st. It's subject to change, but I'm thinking of going to Broad Acres Fisheries. It's not that far away, so we'll take the scenic route.

Sadly I will no longer be available to lead the Sunday A run on 28th April.

I had prewarned the cafe at Ilmington and planned a route and will need to notify them that I no longer intend to use them as a destination. . If anyone wishes to continue with Ilmington then please let me know. My proposed route had been https://ridewithgps.com/routes/29529876

Sorry folks I wont now be able to lead a Club Run to the Meriden Cyclists' Memorial Service on 19th May. Or anywhere else really as I'm recovering from a minor op. We'll see if anyone else will pick it up. I'll go over by car or car and Brompton though.

By way of background to the Memorial Service for those who've not been before. In 1921 a Memorial was set up in Meriden by public subscription to commerate the many cyclists who died in the “Great War” 1914-1918. Meriden was chosen as the centre of England (always a matter of geographical debate!). Thousands turned out for the initial ceremony and it is a tradition that local cyclists and cycling clubs have kept going ever since. 2021 will be the 100th anniversary of course.

It has always been clear that this Memorial and the Service was not to glorify war but a way of fellow cyclists remembering the many young men and women who were caught up in war and those who did not survive. Unfortunately, there have been too many wars since and additional plaques have been added to the Memorial since 1921 including the Second World War and subsequent conflicts.

Our research for the 2014 Service 100 years after the start of WW1 showed how many soldiers from the Empire were involved in the fighting from Africa, Caribbean, India and including Muslim, Sikh and Hindu faiths. The Service is led by the local Vicar to a Christian format but in recent years has included a very moving address by a representative of Veterans for Peace, this year will include a poem from a Sikh representative and next year we plan to involve an Imam. Beacon RCC lays a wreath with the simple message All Faiths and All Nations We Remember. The music is provided by the Bulkington Brass Band.

Cycling was at the height of its popularity in 1914 and many clubs were decimated by the losses of the war. Most of these young men were conscripted into the infantry while women served in hospital units and of course munitions factories. However, there were specific Cycling Battalions as the military experimented with what was still a new technology. Military cycling suffered from the problem familiar to all club run leaders of keeping the group together especially when some were towing guns or ammunition. Also because parades are important to military training and traditions the cycles passing at walking pace wobbling around looked untidy compared to smart marchers or tanks in crawler gears. In practice most military cycling was for scouting and communications purposes although some early BSA folding bikes were used by parachutists in the Second World War.
