Club Runs - 19th May

so that was an eventful weekend. The Velo went ahead of course, and it was great to see so many Beacon riders riding. By my estimate, there was between 20-30 members all posting to strava and seeming to enjoy it. Of course the day was seriously marred by a rider crashing on a descent and subsequently dying of his injuries...This is an obvious tragedy for his family and reminds us all that what we do can be inherently dangerous, so it is beholden on all of us to look after each other on club runs and live by the mantras that Philip Whiteman set out last week.

As for the weekend (of course over-ridden by the issue above) the Velo was pretty damn good. 17,000 cyclists, great weather and generally most people enjoyed it...although when you look at social media, you do rather lose the will to live!

As for other events at the weekend, as well as the Velo, the Fred Whitton in the Lake District is a bucket list event, and congrats to Neil Lynch and Richard Greer (at least) for completing one of the toughest rides in the UK. There were time trials galore (so many in fact that for the first time in my memory, no one turned up at the Beacon club TT), with people time trialling even in Dumfries as well as Bromsgrove. There were also the Shenstone audaxes up into the Peak District with Beacon members...did anyone do nothing this weekend? It seems everyone was out doing something....oh, and of course we had two club runs dodging the road closures on Sunday out to Brewood and Hillers café (thanks to Nick Shenton and Neil Evanson for leading the A and C rides respectively)

Anyway, all three club runs have leaders this Sunday, and NOTE The A and C RIDES LEAVE EARLIER THAN NORMAL!!! This week's rides are:

A: Burford, Tenbury Wells - Philip Whiteman (meet at 08:00 for 08:15 depart)
B: Charlecote - George Barker
C: Meriden via Lavender Hall - Helen Jamieson (meet at 07:45 for 8am depart)

Women's only ride on Saturday...details here and on Facebook!

It is the Worcester marathon this Sunday (19th), 09:30 start, the route is here if you plan on going out that way and wish to avoid the runners.

I did and it was my first randonnee since last summer, so it hurt. It's a hard ride and was aching heavily even before reaching the half way stage. Great countryside and pretty much 200km of pastoral and Peak District scenery. Former Beacon member, Stuart Underwood, was riding in his new Tamworth colours.

For anyone who’s not aware, it’s the service at the cyclists’s Memorial in meridan on Sunday. We’ll ride to lavender hall for breakfast, then go onto meridan for the service, where wreaths will be laid from Beacon RCC and other cycling clubs from around the region.
If the weather looks cool, please bring a warm top to put on during the service. If it’s sunny, don’t forget the suncream. 😊

Many thanks for pointing this out, Si. I was unaware of that, and it would have messed up my original plans. I've decided to lead a conventional B run, heading south-east to avoid the marathon. Details to follow in the next day or two.

Also, the lane from Oddingley to Crowle at Oddingley Level Crossing is closed for until the end of May.

Hi Philip do you have a route for Sunday you can post?, I'm trying to work out return timings.

Hello Neil. I am not quite sure yet but when I played with the idea of a route, it was 125km - slightly hillier on the way back

Apologies for the delay posting a destination/route... I've been a bit busy.

Since the marathon scuppered my original plans and I don't have time to research anything a bit different, I'm going to be very boring and repeat the last B run that I led (in February). Sunday's B run will be to Charlecote Garden Centre. It's 88km (55 miles) of rolling terrain, which I'm aiming to cover at about 25-26kph (16mph). So that's about 3h30m riding, with a return to the Black Horse by about 13:30 to 13:45.

- Route on Strava
- Route on BikeHike

Looks like being on the cool side of average for the time of year, with a chance of a shower in the early afternoon, but not too bad.

Would be great to see you, Barry, but the pace will be a bit tame by your standards!

Can I clarify what time the B ride is departing as the return time would suggest 9 but the original post said all rides were leaving earlier than normal.

Today’s C run to the Meriden service started out well.
5 of us set off from the black horse.
Unfortunately about 10 miles short of Meriden I suffered an almost terminal mehanical. The guys managed to turn it into a single speed and get the wheel back in, albeit in a quite low gear so I was peddling like mad!!
Anyhow, we managed to get to lavender hall, where 2 stayed to have breakfast and three off us dashed to Meriden to meet Dave Cox, just as the service was starting! Thanks to everyone for sorting the bike for me. I got a lift home from Meriden via wedges bakery. :D
On the ride were
Neil evenson
Mark mackonky
Adrian mchugh
Andy knott
Dave Cox (ceremony)
Helen j (lead)

Helen and the Beacon always get through true grit. I waited at Lavender Hall and then thought you wouldn't make it. Sorry to hear about the bike. If you have trouble getting it fixed a friend of mine has a contact who fixes carbon frames. Thanks also to Andy and Ade for coming along. And a superb bit of wreath laying Helen many thanks.

A ride through the Worcestershire Fen Country to Burford Country House near Tenbury.

Out via Stourport, the Teme Valley. Back via Neen Sollars, Clows Top and Stourport. It was good to meet Nick on his first club run and hopefully we shall see him again.

Euripides Fotheringham-Fairfax
Paul Johnson
Philip W (L)
Andy Wrightson
Joe Perrini
Phil Richards
Nick Lelliott
Neil Orchard
James Bendle
Barry Evans
Matt Hale
Vince Tennant

Neil Lynch had to abandon shortly after starting with steering problems, James abandoned on the return with a slashed tyre and Barry experienced a tyre problem on his rather unloved Van Nick. Neil Orchard had a new bike.

On today's B run were:

James Tate
John Hitchcock
Cedric Gioan
Ali Hey
Chris Ankcorn
Si Walker
Phil Gameson
George Barker (L)

It was a thoroughly enjoyable ride (at least from my viewpoint), and it was very good to see Ced step up from C, and Chris step back up for the first time in a while, and both coping admirably.

Cheers all!

Will, I'm very sorry: I didn't see your post until after the ride. Apologies if uncertainty about the departure time deterred you from joining us. Since it was a standard ride and I the possibility of departing at a non-standard time hadn't previously been floated, it simply never crossed my mind to include the departure time in my post with details of the ride. However, in hindsight, I can see that, with the other rides setting out early, there was scope for misunderstanding. I'll bear that in mind for the future. I hope you got in a good ride anyway.

Very well done, Helen. I hope you're able to get the bike sorted without too much trouble/expense.

I forgot to mention that we found a lost mobile phone on the C run. Andy Nott made sure it made its way back to its owner.
