Club Runs - 11th August
There is only one place to start this week, and that is to pay tribute to Norman Adams, a longstanding and notable Beacon member who died last week. Norman's passing is the subject of another thread on this message board, and people who knew him are posting their messages of tribute, but I, like many other new members, didn't meet Norman personally. However, I have name-checked him a few times in the last 3 or 4 years as an example of someone who's cycling legacy is massive within Beacon. His time trial times for 25 and 50 mile TT's are amazing considering that they were ridden in the 40's, 50's and 60's without all the super-slick clothing and bike equipment we have nowadays, and was way faster than many of us can dream of. Allied to this, his monumental club runs with others, which included evening meals at pubs (for Gawds sake!) puts our long current club runs into perspective
So although I never met Norman, we should all mourn his passing and pay respect for his cycling talent which put Beacon on the map. RIP Norman, you will never know the impact you had on people who never knew you.
To the present...
You could say we had 7 club runs last weekend with well over 30 riders out despite it being high holiday season. We had a women's only ride, Beacon Burst, Long 200kms A-ride (where Norman would have torn our legs off), B-ride and 3 variations of C-ride, so if there isn't something there for everyone, you've got the wrong hobby! So hopefully the projected bad weather will have passed by Sunday and we can do more of the same...
This week's rides are:
A: Evesham - Nick Shenton
B: Worcester Country Park - Phil Gameson
c: Stourport - Pete Norman
Women’s Ride - Helen Jamieson (leaves at 8am)

Can't make this Sunday but I would be interested to know what H2O is like? I've been curious about that place for some time.ballintrane wrote: ↑07 Aug 2019 14:30Cafe stop at Cafe H2O https://www.wyche-innovation.com/cafe-h2o with the alternative of the British Camp.

I’ll take the A Run in Paul’s absence but it will be to Evesham leaving at the normal start time from the Black Horse.
Approx 65 miles door to door.

I'll lead a B run to Worcester Country Park.
My intention is to plot a new route of between 55 and 60 miles, but no doubt most of it will be on familiar roads.
I may post the route later today...

Re: Club Runs - 11th August
Here is tomorrow's route:
https://ridewithgps.com/routes/30806296
This is 56 miles, with a longer outward leg (into a headwind) of 32 miles. There is a short section that is technically a bridle path, but from Google Maps it is paved. [Worst case scenario is we retrace our steps a bit, adding an extra couple of miles.
Ride with GPS has 2,999 feet of climbing, but your Garmin will probably show slight more!

I’m leading a ladies ride tomorrow. We’re doing the usual route of around 27 miles, setting off from the black horse at 8am. No cafe stop.
If you’re all about the destination, take a f#€king flight!

Just myself and catherine corr on the ladies ride today. A nice ride and a steady pace, with a yucky headwind at times! No incidents.

Re: Club Runs - 11th August
A minor issue at the Black Horse with James Tate and myself both saying we had posted to lead the B run.
I had posted on the message board and James on Facebook.
James agreed to join the A Run and four of us set off for Worcester Country Park.
The expected head wind did not disappoint!
Our "new" route involved a few hundred metres of fairly narrow unpaved (but rideable) bridleway that passed without incident.
Thanks to Simon for navigating through Worcester as my Garmin had decided not to provided turn by turn instructions today.
The route back was a bit more conventional and shorter, and we had a more favourable wind.

Re: Club Runs - 11th August
On today's blustery, humid, wet, repeat... A ride to Evesham were:
Nick Shenton (Leading)
James Tate
Barry Evans
Andy Wrightson
Neil Lynch
Neil Orchard
Phil (PBP) Richards
Spencer Tapia
Kevin Young
John Sadler
Andy McGrath
Peter Warwick
John Hitchcock joined us for part of the outward route but turned off before the cafe stop.
All the best and good luck to Phil Richards & Jon Williams who embark on the frankly bonkers 1200km Paris Brest Paris Audax in a weeks time.

Re: Club Runs - 11th August
Thanks for the ride today Phil. A really enjoyable, varied route and well done for dodging the downpours.
