Club Runs - 22nd March and coronavirus update
Posted: 16 Mar 2020 10:05
Hi all,
UPDATED IN NEW POST. THE BELOW IS NO LONGER APPLICABLE
so what's it best to do? Cancel everything or run things as normal? There isn't a right answer of course, but official advice is carry on (with precautions) at present. We recognise that there is a growing ethical and emotional response to stop everything and self-isolate, however official guidelines from Sport England last Friday includes:
• We know sport at every level is facing upheaval because of coronavirus (COVID-19) and that this is causing concern and uncertainty.
• The government has today confirmed that people with mild symptoms should stay at home and self-isolate for seven days.
• We know that all of this could affect planned events and activities.
• For now, it doesn't mean you can't still run activities where people gather, and it definitely doesn't mean that people should be discouraged from being active.
• In fact, given that being fit and healthy acts as a deterrent to most infections, it's crucial that members of the public continue to lead active lives throughout this period, whether that's using a local gym or walking or cycling, where it’s possible to do so.
• Unless there's official advice telling you not to do so, and as long as you follow the government advice on how to avoid catching or spreading the virus, you can continue with things like club sports fixtures, group activities and use leisure facilities.
• In every scenario, it’s clear that hand hygiene is critical and if you’re planning to go somewhere that involves using sports equipment, make sure you're thoroughly wiping it down before and after you use it.
As such, We are not going to suspend club runs or club time trials just yet, but no one is actively encouraged to do them, particularly if you have symptoms, or live/socialise with vulnerable groups. We are following Government advice, which changes daily, so please look out for updated advice on this message board regularly.
Finally, if you are over 70 or have some underlying health issues, please think very carefully about participating in activities where there is a lot of social mixing, be that club runs, other cycling activities or even in our wider lives (is there life outside cycling? )
If you want to run a club run, they are still on for now... for the reasons given above.
