RIDE FULL: 12 September: An Intro Ride with a difference!

Post by George » 02 Sep 2021 15:12

For a variety of reasons, September's Introductory Ride has been put back from the first Sunday of the month to the second Sunday, i.e. 12 September.

That day is also the day of the club's Hill Climb Championship. The Hill Climb is one of the traditional highlights of the club's calendar. There's always a good turnout of competitors, helpers and spectators, plus an enjoyable mix of race-day excitement and end-of-term joviality. Many club members gather afterwards for light refreshments at a local café. So I think a short ride that includes watching the Hill Climb would be a great introduction to club life.

I propose starting at the usual time and place (Black Horse, 09:00 meet-up for 09:15 departure) and making a loop round via Clent and Drayton to arrive at the Hill Climb course by 11:00. We'll then spend maybe half or three quarters of an hour watching the action, before riding on for another five minutes or so to Waseley Hills Country Park for refreshments. From there, it's a very short ride back to the Black Horse. The main loop of the ride will be about 35km (22mi) and the total Black Horse-to-Black Horse distance is 42km (26mi). The route is available to view and download here: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/37369814

Participants should be aware that the proposed route is hilly (it's hard to avoid hills around there). The route should nevertheless be doable for anyone who's used to riding for a couple of hours, because a) we'll go very slowly, b) it isn't far, c) none of the hills are stupidly steep (it's just that they keep coming), d) there are stops along the way, and e) we're not too proud to get off and walk.

The ride will be limited to ten participants (two leaders plus eight newcomers), on the basis of advance registration.

Current participant list:
George Barker (L)
Mariana Sorrill (L2)
Kouros Karbaschi
Kali-Ann Gills
Aron Debretsion (tbc)
David Lawrence
Aiden Robinson
David Clifford
Neil Haigh
Marc Hawes

Hi,

Sounds great. Think you might already have your 8 now, but, if there is space, I would really like to come along.

Will ask to come along again another time if so.

Thanks,

Neil

Neil, the limit of eight is fairly arbitrary. On top of which, Aron is currently unconfirmed... and if he does come, he will barely count as a newcomer because, although he's new to the Beacon, he's a very experienced cyclist just starting again after a break. I would therefore be happy to add you to the list. I look forward to seeing on on Sunday.

Hi, would it be possible to join this ride or is it at the limit for numbers?

Haha, I see I've created a problem for myself by bending the rules previously! (Albeit because one of the original eight remained unconfirmed.)

Marc, I believe I have led a group of ten before on one of these rides, and I have a very capable assistant in the form of Mariana, and we do want to make these rides as welcoming as possible... so, all things considered, I'll adjust the limit to ten to create space for you.

I look forward to seeing you on Sunday.

IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR ANYONE STILL LOOKING TO JOIN THIS RIDE:

Ten participants is the most that I feel can ride on the open road as a safe, compact group. We now have ten people signed up, so Mariana and I cannot take any more in our group.

However, if you still want to join, please let us know anyway. If there are more would-be participants, I will investigate the possibility of getting a second leadership team to take a second group, setting off maybe ten minutes after the first group. There's no promise that a second group can be formed, and 'extra' riders shouldn't turn up unless and until it's been confirmed that we can form a second group.

We had a thoroughly enjoyable Intro Ride today. Well, I enjoyed it, anyway.

Matt helpfully made himself available at short notice so that we could divide the group and accommodate Laura. However, we had a couple of drop-outs, so ultimately started as a single group. Matt's presence nevertheless came in very useful when Kouros developed a mechanical problem and we divided the group on the road. Mariana did a fantastic job of nursing Kouros round on his temperamental mount. Many thanks to both my co-leaders for their contributions, and to all the newcomers for joining us and taking on the hilliest Intro Ride ever. The final participant list was:
George Barker (L)
Mariana Sorrill (L2)
Matt Hale (L3)
Kouros Karbaschi
David Lawrence
Aiden Robinson
David Clifford
Neil Haigh
Marc Hawes
Laura Forrest

(We were joined at the café by Helen Jamieson and Si Woodward, which, by our admitted rather odd club run points rules, entitles them to points, I believe.)

Finally, a reminder to everyone that the efforts of today's fastest Beacon hill climber, Ant Featherstone, and all our other champions, will be celebrated at the Annual Dinner in November. A fantastic night that you really won't want to miss! See:

George, thank you for a fab intro ride, really enjoyed it, and everyone's company.
Beacon seems like a great club to join, so I'll no doubt see you again soon.
