Weekly Club Update and Club runs for the weekend of 14th November

Post by WorcsPhil » 08 Nov 2021 09:55

Beacon RCC was formed on November 10th, 1946, so this Wednesday sees the actual 75th anniversary when 13 guys got together at the top of the Lickeys and said:

"shall we form a club?"
"why not", came the reply, "what we shall we call ourselves"?

After a few names got rejected, Churchills...the Villa Crew, the South Birmingham Perambulators, someone said:

"well, we're at the top of Beacon Lane, let's call ourselves Beacon"
"Great, what colour tops...and don't suggest claret and blue, Harry!"
"Fausto Coppi is a decent cyclist, so how about something Italian"

...and so it came to pass. So if you're out on Wednesday, raise a gloved hand and salute all those who came before us in the famous tricolore...and raise a more liquidy toast this coming Saturday night at the Anniversary party.

...and club runs continue like a glorious sinuous river that never ends... thanks to the leaders who volunteered on Sunday, and it was great to see 6 or 7 Beacon riders out on Saturday's testing 210kms audax from Tewkesbury...proving beyond doubt that we love our long rides!

Yes, it is the dinner on Saturday evening, but club runs are still allowed on Sunday, so it may be best to be a little later and a little shorter for those contemplating leading this weekend. Why not go hair of the dog and ride on Sunday...others will follow as they have done for the last 3,899 weekends of our club (...and yes, I am sad enough to work that out accurately    )

Have a good week.

And you forget to add:

"Yes, and in 51 years time on Saturday 23rd July or thereabouts, our new Beacon Club will have a thing called The Kidderminster Killer Audax. It will be 135 miles in length".

"Will it include lots of hills?"

"Nah, that would be stupid".
"Not only that, you will be able to enter using a type of Charles Babbage machine straight out of science fiction. You won't even have to purchase a 2 farthing stamp or use the General Post Office".

"How will one do that?".

"By using a very strange postal address that reads as " https://audax.uk/event-details?eventId=9313 "
