Origin of the Snowdrop Audax

Post by George » 17 Oct 2021 10:52

I know that the Snowdrop Audax was started by Alan Mason some time around the turn of the millenium. However, I'm not sure whether it was the very late 1990s or the very early 2000s. I'm inclined to think the latter, because I have a photo taken in 2003, which I know was one of the early editions. Can anyone confirm this, or tell me that I'm wrong?

I can't confirm it but I thought the event originated in the 90s. I joined soon after 2000 and the event already existed by that point.

Thanks, Phil. That's helpful but inconclusive. It might be, for example, that you joined in 2001 and Snowdrop started in 2000.

Were they organised as Beacon events from the start? Early versions of the audax page on the website (early 2000s) make it sound like the summer audaxes were the only ones the club ran at that point: https://web.archive.org/web/20021213115 ... /Audax.htm.

I believe that they were Beacon events from the start, Laurence, but I can't be sure of that. I seem to recall Alan's request to run them as Beacon events being considered by an AGM or something. Also, my feeling is that my photo was taken at the second or third edition of the event, which would mean it started in 2000 or 2001. However, again, I can't be sure that I'm not a year or so out with that.

My reason for wanting to know is largely 'academic'; I can work around the uncertainty if no one knows for sure.
