Snowdrop Express: Many thanks to Phil and supporters

Post by Philip Whiteman » 25 Feb 2023 18:46

No, Phil does not have a support act. He is not a well popular music band at one of those concert venues. However, there were quite a few volunteers out on the day. Organising this event is rather like an iceberg, you only see one third of the work. The other two thirds occur during the run-up and aftermath, consisting of audax administration and responding to countless rider enquiries. Running two routes on the same day also adds complexity that does not come with a single route event.

The Sunrise and Snowdrop Express is the cycling event equivalent of Saint Swithun's Day. If it the weather is fair, the remaining events in that year will be fair. If it floods, the rest will be a washout*. I have to complain at the selfishness of the Sunrisers who had completely cleared out Raphael's of breeze block sized bread pudding. May you suffer a bloated stomachs for the remainder of your day.

Don't forget if you are an audaxer that completed six or more events during 2022 and did not volunteer today, you need to volunteer as a supporter at either the Kidderminster Killer or Beyond the Dyke events to enter further Beacon audaxes this year. Please let me know which event you will be supporting. The usual jobs are marshalling during the morning, refreshments either AM or PM or close-down cleaning.

*None of these assertions are based upon sound empirical evidence.

FUTURE BEACON AUDAX EVENTS
  • The Kidderminster Killer starting from Belbroughton. The toughest audax event in the Midlands at 217km with 3,750m of gruelling ascents. This is a great event for the bucket list but you need to be fit enough to complete this distance and the 28 challenging climbs. 22nd July. Comes with added WI cake half way#
  • Friday Ferlix starting from Stourport. A brand new basic no thrills 205km event that uses rarely audaxed roads through the Radnorshire Hills. 11th August ~
  • Beyond the Dyke starting from Belbroughton with a cooked meal for returning riders. Third time lucky for dry weather, we hope. 30th September#

FUTURE DROITWICH CC EVENTS

  • Hay Skivers! returns on Friday 5th May, starting from Bewdley. This comes a day before Charlie boy gets crowned. The route includes the classic climbs out of Hay and over the Black Mountains. 205km ~
  • South Shropshire Hills is part of Bewdley Bike Week and is a challenging 117km route to, you've guessed it, the South Shropshire Hills. 3rd June ~
  • Salinae and Cotswolds is a varied 212km route through the Cotswolds of level and hilly. 11th November. Comes with added soup#

# denotes event starting and finishing from a venue with catering.
~ denotes a basic and so called 'x rated' event without a venue. Riders need to use a phone app or post proofs of passage to the organiser after the event.
The E Brevet phone app will be available at all of the above events for 'proof of passage'

Yes, many thanks to Phil and all his helpers at the HQ and the controls. Another great event!
