Beacon Cotswold Audax 2012

Post by George » 30 Mar 2012 13:36

We are now taking entries for the 2012 Cotswold Audax!

We’re following the format many of you will be familiar with from previous years, with lovely picturesque routes and loads of grub and freebies, but:
- We’ve tweaked a short section of our longest option
- We’re including a couple of really nice new cafés on our two longer rides
- We’ve polished up our photo service (weather permitting, we’ll be photographing as many riders as possible and making the digital images available afterwards FREE)
- We’re in the process of upgrading our GPS support
- We’ve got a new bottle supplier (super bottles this time!)
- And, if you enter via the website, it’ll cost you LESS than it did last year!

I'm also in for the 160km, but I really wished that I would have checked my diary first as I have just noticed that I have also entered the 200 km Mr Pickwicks High Summer Meander which is on the day before.....doh!!!

Bah, you can manage 360km in a single weekend. No excuses.

My excuse: I am back to my outdoor roots, doing silly things in wilderness. This time it will be walking into to the teeth of a full-on Atlantic storm on An Cliseam, a very remote mountain on Harris. http://www.sealga.co.uk/hebrides/med/su ... aintir.jpg

Thanks for the entries so far, folks. Keep them coming. And if anyone doesn't get the info e-mail or spots any flaws, please say ... a lot of the admin has changed this year and, if there are any bugs in the system, I'd like to pick them up before the real flood starts.

Well, assuming you can sit on a saddle without undue discomfort, your participation would be most welcome.

Are we going to organise a group like we did on the Sunrise/Snowdrop Express or is it every one for themselves?

I don't wish to worry you Nic, but according to the list that George has just posted, your down to ride the Expedition?

Thanks to George and the army of helpers for another first class event. Seriously good fun,and seriously bad jokes, especially the one where my pedals seemed to become welded to the cleats and just would not disengage.Just about got them off in time for the football.(wish I'd not bothered)

A big thanks to George and all the helpers from me too, and to all of the people I rode with over the course of the day - you made my first Audax an experience not to forget.

It was all good thanks to everyone who helped out. I'd particularly like to thank Rob and John from Severn RC who I rode with for most of the day great pace and good company.

And thanks from me to everyone who came along to ride or help. Being at the centre of the team is a bit manic at times (especially when you keep discovering things you should have discovered a month ago) but always great fun.

Fuller feedback later.

Thanks to everyone who helped make this another great Beacon audax - George (and family), kitchen helpers, car park guys, controls. Got very wet and mucky and as a result (like Greg) my front mech seized up and (like Keith) got stuck on my bike as my cleats seized up too! Thanks to Ian for the company on the way round, hope your arms aren't too tired from all the tyre pumping you had to do!

Many thanks to George and helpers for another excellent audax. I thought afterwards I should have told Dave and Ann that if two blokes called Yeates turned up at Charlecote on their own they should have been given firm instructions to go back and look for their mum.

Many thanks to George & all the rest of the organising team. Also special thanks to the guys i rode around with - Alan, Matt, Nic, Ian, Greg & Keith - for towing me around.

Many thanks indeed to all who made it happen, another great day of cycling. 3 years in a row and still a fantastic ride. I got drenched twice, but weather turned out to be better than I though it would?

I don't why, but I was a little slower getting round this year. Cycling time excluding stops increased. I'm either less fit, getting old, or it was just the wind?

Clive, I haven't performed any kind of detailed analysis, but my general impression was that most people took longer than last year. Anything I might say about the reasons would be guesswork, but it's hard to imagine that the weather wasn't a factor.

Wind and cold make a huge difference to riding long distances. I recently rode the Droitwich-Towcester audax into the the teeth of a strong east wind. The journey took 4.5 hours outbound and 3.5 hours on the way back!

The only times I have managed a sub-8 hour 200km audaxes have been in hot weather. In mid-winter, I can expect anything less than 10 hours.

My first ever Audax of 160km ! Driving rain (got soaked, dried out then soaked for a second time) and strong winds really slowed us down, had some real fun though, Andy Nott’s great water proof trousers were so good it didn’t start raining till he took then off !
Thanks to Ian for having all our **flat**s.

Would I do it next year ? Too right I will !

Thanks George and everyone who helped out.

I bumped into Ian in Waitrose in Harborne this morning and he had so much fun fixing those **flat**s that he's decided to jet off to France to tackle the Alpe d'Huez this weekend. No joke.
