The Kidderminster Killer and Clee to Heaven Audax Review 2013
Thank you everyone that participated in the event this year. What an epic it was. Despite the prolonged rain never materialising, it was blowy old day but many of you completed some tough and challenging rides. Even more impressive was the number of audax virgins – will the next stop for them be 'London-Edinburgh-London' in 2017?
Understandably there was a larger than normal DNS rate due to the atrocious forecast broadcasted the night before. So it was astounding how many people did start. Thanks to the BBC’s wildly inaccurate forecast, many other missed out on what was ostensibly a dry day minus the heavy shower experienced at lunch time as people were strategically placed on the side of Clee Hill or crossing The Stiperstones. Far from a fiasco, the day went well for those that managed to complete their event.
The Kidderminster Killer
56 out of 77 people started. Of those 56 starters, 48 finished with the remainder not finishing due to illness or supporting friends that were ill. For those that asked about Ralph whose handle bars snapped, he sought a replacement a Church Stretton from where he recommenced his journey but was delayed heavily although he continued his travels as far as Ludlow.
We are not allowed to rank times of riders of audaxes but let us say that Andrew Tomlinson was the ‘winner’ of this year’s Kidderminster Killer when he rolled into GHQ at 5.45pm. The lantern rouge was a group of slovenly heathens from the Beacon who finished at 10.15pm.
Feedback was on this year’s route was generally positive apart from “that dastardly hill out of Clun that could hardly be described as spiffing”. So, next I do not propose any changes to the route and will not remove that hill out of Clun. The revisions this year certainly sped up the event by cutting off 30 minutes on average by avoiding Alveley Country Park and the moon cratered Jays Lane before Leintwardine.
From Clee to Heaven
From Clee to Heaven: 44 out of 67 people started. Of those 44 starters, 31 were validated with AudaxUK Regulations. The remainder were people who were not concerned about an audax attempt and were just simply out for the ride. Two people were timed out due to a mechanical and two bailed due to an accident. The first person to return was Nick Blackham at 3.05pm whilst the lantern rouge arrived at 5.30pm and well within the limit.
The revisions to this year’s route were positively received, so no changes will be made for next year. Riders from last year appreciated the loss of the lengthy B road section on Stage 2, even if it did result in a sharp haul back onto the side of Brown Clee.
GPS
Some troubles were experienced with either directly downloading from Bikeroutetoaster or the number of track points used. So, next year I will probably provide a GPX file to resolve some of the difficulties.
With thanks
• Graham Kelly (Ludlow Controller),
• John Hamilton, AUK National Events Secretary and Acton Scott Controller;
• Mark Rigby, organiser of the many excellent Tewkesbury audaxes and Rays Farm Controller
• Carol and Bob Green, along with excellent help from the Grand-daughter; Lynne Yeates, Michelle McGuirk, Jane Herrin and Clare Abyss who provided riders with gallons of tea and several tons of bacon;
• Dave Cole and Lisa 'her indoors' Spurgeon on registrations and validation;
• Marshals, George Barker, Chaz White and Oscar Hopkins;
• Steve Smith for eating most of the cake and running the web-pages;
• Charles White for taking photographs on the side of windswept hills.
• Custodian and inspiration of the Kidderminster Killer for many years until 2011, Dave Pountney of Kidderminster CTC.
And finally, to all you that made an excellent event and a great sense of camaraderie.
Next audaxes
• 22nd February 2014 – The Sunrise and Snowdrop Express from Hartlebury. These always sell out months in advance.
• Late June – The Cotswolds Audaxes from South Birmingham.
• 16th August 2014 – The Kidderminster Killer and From Clee to Heaven.
• The Montgomery Madness Permanent audax – available all-year-round .

Results are now available for fully validated rides as distinct from people who merely rode the route.

and on the 7th day God created CLEATS..!
I would have expected more blurring of the spokes on the shots of the Burway climb .........must of been a really fast shutter speed ,as least that's one explanation
