Autumn Epic Sportive: 5th October

Post by Philip Whiteman » 30 Apr 2014 13:18

Dear All

Phil Richards referred to this event last year and suggested that the Beacon go en-mass. http://www.beaconrcc.org.uk/message_boa ... php?t=6008

It is an excellent event and an example of a sportive providing good VFM.

I will probably enter.

They have just e-mailed the following:

Autumn Epic 2014
It's back, with 'Earlybird' offers.

With spring really kicking into gear, its time to fill your cycling calendar with 'must do' rides. The Autumn Epic 2014 is now open, and to reward our loyal riders we are offering an 'earlybird' entry at a discounted price of £19. This price includes entry, two food stops, electronic event timing, outriders, broom wagon, 155km and 2200m climbing on the beautiful Radnor hills.

You'd be a fool to miss this opportunity

This is a great event if you have never done it before.

Phil (W) - re: your posting of a week ago - this probably will clash with the Falling Leaves audax.

Sounds attractive ... if there's a slow group riding.

By the way, it's the 5th.

I'm in also...I enjoyed it last year despite a stonking cold, so hoping for better health this year. It seems as if it is mandatory for Phil's to be there Mr Gameson, Field etc....

Bump...

As well as Phils Richards, Field and Whiteman who have entered this sportive, we have also persuaded Phils Spector, Silvers and Mickelson to join us.

Any more Beacon riders tempted? This is a tough 140kms hilly ride starting and finishing from Knighton over the Elan Valley climbs and back via a few hills that can only be described as 'dreadful'...is that not reason enough?

Last big sportive of the year. It is on the same day as the Shelsley Walsh hill climb and Falling Leaves Audax (I think) but well worth the extra effort to trudge out to Knighton for this event.

Hi guys, just wondered as there was a number of beaconites entered for this sportive whether people are looking to ride together?

I was planning upon leaving Knighton at 9. However, I shall probably ride at an easy pace due to recent illness and may even opt for the shorter route. It is not my intention to ride 'eye-balls out' on this occasion.

I'm not sure what to do. Being something of an hgv I'm going to have to get round at a steady pace, especially as I'm not carrying the best fitness at the moment. Whilst I'd like to ride with other beaconites I'm concerned that my broom wagon approach to climbing would ruin your ride given your abilities in the hills. I probably want to start around 8 really but do plan on the longer route.

What time are you planning on starting Ian?

As for me, I also intend to get there for 8am to sign on for a prompt start at 08:30, which is the earliest start time according to the website...not 'eyeballs out' but a steady ride...it's up and down all day after an easy-ish first 10k, so let's start together and play it by ear. Hopefully see you at 8am for a cup of tea and bit of brekkie.

Guys, wasn't necessarily looking to go all out as I know about the sting in tail at Glascwym, 20%-25%! Happy to go steady as its a nice ride, weather permitting.

Registration opens at 08:00 so probably start just after, if that helps.

Will try to make 8am then.

Sunday looks to be cool at 10C, slightly damps with a gentle wind.
