Run, Ride and Ramble for Rory - Charity Event

Post by AlanW » 20 Aug 2014 17:20

On Saturday 20th September Worcester Acute Hospitals NHS Trust Charitable Fund is putting on a family ‘Ride for Rory’ event in support of the Rory the Robot Appeal. The appeal itself is looking to raise £1.6million for a new state of the art surgical robot, which will radically improve treatment for prostate cancer patients across Worcestershire.

Prostate cancer claims the life of one man every hour and by 2030 will be the most common form of cancer. In Worcestershire alone there are 2,500 men surviving prostate cancer at any one time, with 70 - 80 radical prostate cancer operations carried out locally per year.

Rory is a Da Vinci surgical system, which allows surgeons to perform minimally invasive surgery, negating lengthy and risking open surgery. Rory offers many benefits to conventional surgery, these include: Less Blood Loss / Less Pain / Lower Risk of Complications / Shorter Hospital Stays / Faster Recovery.

“A surgical robot would enable us to offer our patients an enhanced service with more precise surgery, better recovery times and a reduced stay in hospital. This surgery is already becoming available elsewhere in the country and we want to make it available locally for all Worcestershire patients. If everyone in Worcestershire donated just £3.20 each we would be able to buy the robot straight away. Please support the Rory the Robot Appeal and help us save lives."
Adel Makar - Urology Consultant & Lead Cancer Clinician

We are looking for people to get involved in fundraising but also need local people to help promote the Rory the Robot Appeal. I would be extremely grateful if you could support the ‘Ride for Rory’ cycle event and would love to hear from you if you would like to support the appeal in other ways.

Thank you in advance for supporting the Rory the Robot Appeal
