Great Dun Fell

Anyone ridden up this guy here?:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Dun_Fell

There's a road from Knock (close to Penrith) that ends up on a service road to the radar station that apparently is closed to vehicles but open to cycles and in really good condition. At around 800m ascending its about as close to an alpine col as we can get in the UK.

I was going to crack the whip up it last year but didn't get round to it so planning to take a trip up there on the train this summer. If anyone wants to join we could have a small Beacon delegation visit?

There's also a radar station at the top and as a radar scientist this excites me. I am not ashamed of this.

It's 7.4km at 8.4% with 625m of ascent. Similar in difficulty to Col de Marie Blanque (from Escot) 9.5km at 7.5%, 715m ascent.

There's a hill climb up there I'd love to do later in the season.

I wouldn't mind a day trip at some stage though.

I'd be well up for that - any idea what club / CTT route it is? (The CTT search function is diabolical).

Sure we could scratch together a few people together for a jolly otherwise

I have ridden up it, fantastic road surface :) There was a mental headwind the day I did it though, and I had to get off & push part way!! Coming back down I clocked my fastest every bike speed - perfectly straight descent for a bit of it on super smooth road...it's just pretty exposed, definitely up for hill climb up there

Just looked on the CTT website & searched for that course number - it recognised the course number but no events are up there for 2017...might be they get added later
